Schiit Magni Unity - Impressions Thread

I'm starting to like electrostatics more. I tried a different Ohm setting from the iESL. The good thing is that I can control tonality with it. Every setting sounds so different. 24 Ohm was best for dynamic and electrostatic headphones. Very good clarity without being too harsh. 16 ohm was too harsh at treble and too low ohm was just too mellow. I use 4 ohm speaker taps :) Need to be very cautious when using ultralinear mode and it is rated 45W.

For my amp 31 ohm output sound the most balanced. So I'd imagine both 24 or 31 are within the ballpark. (Since my amp can only do 0.1 or 31 or 68)

Yeah more companies should do adjustable output impedance. To my surprise it worked pretty well.

Looks like some :poop: is coming to town in a few days.

The Heretic was not really a goal... Screw this... The last of its kind anyway... 🤷‍♂️
That was my thought, too, and I prefer it to the Vali 2 (debating trying a JAN 5670W to see if it can win) and the Magni 3+. Greater detail. Greater control. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. I think a lot depends on your hearing. I can't hear to 20kHz, so the "digititus" some report with the Heretic's highs doesn't reach me. ;-) YMMV.

My expectations are very low for the Heretic. And that's good, actually. :L3000:

Let me quote myself and the reasoning will be clear:
My little Magni 3+ at the office is now 4 years old and has recently developed some weird behavior: big popping at the left channel when plugging anything into the jack, and channel imbalance (-3dB in L). My work-around has been an attenuator -- also for the obvious reason of more granularity in the volume pot -- and somehow that voltage divider addresses the channel imbalance, but I fear that I should retire the little fella ASAP before it decides to play Kamikaze with one of my transducers.
Here's my setup at the office, by the way:

Magni 3+ / Modi 3 stack with the dust cover (a.k.a. paper towel)

After prospecting the Asgard and the Piety, the decision on the Unity was purely made on the "latest is always better rule". Joke aside, the form factor and the 3-year warranty checked big boxes for me as well.

As far as the Heretic goes, it will be stacked with the old Modi 3. I can then keep rotating this gear from time to time. The old Magni 3+ will likely be retired.

I look forward to receiving these 2 little amps.

Did you buy a Magni+ and a Magni Unity?

They cheaped out on the user guide. It is the same user guide for both siblings (Magni+/Heretic).

Got the Heretic (last call) along with the Unity.

Did you find there's any sound difference?

While testing for the inputs in the Unity, I could A/B internal DAC against the RCA coming from the LP DAC. Could not spot any differences whatsoever, which is good, I guess.

The Unity is heading right away to the office, while the Heretic is staying here a little longer. I will try to A/B against the Liquid Spark.

But hey, I was very happy with the low (negative) gain. It seems I no longer need the attenuator/iEMatch with these Magnis. :champagne:

Clean desk. Now we're talking... 🥰

I thought I would get rid of the attenuator, but nope. Office environment is so quiet that the -10dB given by this Magni (a.k.a. low gain) is simply not enough to have granularity in the volume control.

Same here. Absolutely loving the Magni Unity. Single DAC/amp and small size just works for my needs.

Congrats on the new Unity. The black color looks sick. Maybe I'll pick a black version in the next iteration: Magni Unity Turbo.

I came from a Magni 3+, and back in the day they had a different supplier for the brushed aluminum. With a better finishing, IMO. This new brushed one also looks good but I feel there are some sharp edges in the venting holes at the top. Haven't cut any fingers yet but did not push strong against those holes either. Probably not an issue in the (black) painted version, though.
Nevertheless, conveniency is often underrated in this hobby. Cheers. :beerchug:

On a separate note, I am starting to look for a case/bag that can fit this little Magni, the walwart and a USB cable. Then, I could have a portable Magni. Something like this, for instance:
I keep this LGX in a messenger bag and occasionally use it to check if it is still working. And it is. And the best of all, dust-free.

I'll eventually find a solution. There is no rush at the moment.

Did everyone that bought a Magni Unity with the DAC card get a USB A to USB C cable included with the unit? I’m buying this as a gift for my niece and want to make sure she’ll have everything she needs in the box.

While I don't have this exact unit but based from my experience with any Schiit DAC is that they never include any cable.

So there is super high chance that it won't come with cable, you're better off buying another one for her to be on the safe side.

Even the Pietus Maximus with DAC card didn't come with any cable.

Hope this helps, and I hope your niece enjoys the unit!
