Schiit Lyr+ : Impressions Thread

OK, Lyr+ owners, I almost pulled the trigger on a Jotunheim 2, but as nearly all of my listening is near-field and I tend to listen at low volumes, I'm thinking the Lyr+ with its much greater volume control may be better. Of course, the fact that it is a better amp according to most also factors in. What are your thoughts on low volume listening. It sounds as if there is a lot of what I'd call micro adjustment up to 12 o'clock. Any people out there who don't blast it who are enjoying it for that fact? I am genuinely curious. Having two inputs, it handles my needs, which are really just DAC and phono.j

The fact that I can also play around with tubes to slightly alter the sound helps, too, but mostly I am looking at it because of the low gain issue. I really can't even listen to my Vali 2 at 9 o'clock in my system. I'm sitting here listening to my Heretic at 10 o'clock on low gain...
I used a lyr+ as a pre-amp for my Genelecs for about 2 years (recently swapped it out with a Mjolnir 3). I also listen at low volume and I’d say it worked fine for me. Never had any issues and tube rolling made noticeable differences in sound even at lower volumes.

With that said, I find the Mjolnir 3 to be a considerable improvement over the Lyr+ as a pre-amp. I know you’re probably not looking for a big SS amp, but if your primary use is near field speakers, then I would probably suggest an alternative (Kara?).

If low gain attenuation is a priority for you I would say the Lyr+ is uniquely positioned as an ideal candidate. With low impedance, high sensitivity loads, at low gain the Lyr+ still offers a great deal of range on the volume pot, and virtually no noise.

Thanks. Starting with a Jotunheim, and planning to shell out the extre $250 for the Lyr+ if I can’t make the gain work. What you wrote is exactly what I thought would be the case.

Got my Lyr+ yesterday because I needed small preamp which had a remote and could take tubes expand the soundstage, holographic and smoothen sound a bit for a budget power amp.

6SN7s on order: Grand Fidelity Treasure Globe SE, Wathen Audio Cryotone
also have a 6922 to 6SN7 adapter on the way and will try out 6922s: Electro Harmonix, Gold Lion, Cryotone

Lyr+ is being fed by a LaiV Harmony uDAC (perhaps adding a uDDC later)

output is going to an 3E-Audio A5 amp in power amp mode, with upgraded VirtualHifi Supersonic V2 op amps.

current speakers are KEF LS50m...soon to be replaced by Buchard Audio E50s.

Let's goooooo!

Back when I was researching Freya+, I saw lots of thread about modding Freya+ by upgrading to better quality caps and resistors.

Anyone know of any ways to level up the Lyr+ (other than tube rolling) that's worth pursuing?

Here's my Lyr plus with the Treasure Globe 6SN7-SE Grant Fidelity Limited Special Edition.

They really add the tube magic I wanted - that extra smoothness and holography.

Source is LAIV Harmony µDAC.

My jemosa 6922 to 6SN7 adapter arrived today and I rolled a few tubes in my Schiit Lyr+.

Tried my Electro Harmonix 6922 sounded really great. Might be slightly leaner, but with more well defined note edges.

Also tried my Wathen Audio Cryotone 12BH7, again sounds phenomenal.

Big question is do I notice any differences between these and my native 6SN7 GF Global Treasure SE?

Hard to tell with the quick listening sessions. I was primarily seeing if the tubes would work. I also was just checking out the dimensionality of the soundstage, which is one of the most important factors.

All of them have given me a holographic, immersive 3D soundstage. Without critical listening, I think there are subtle differences with the bass quality and quantity the 6SN7 having bigger bolder bass. The 12BH7 gave a super immersive psychedelic feeling - maybe due to the mostly even order harmonics.

These adapters just expand the tube rolling options to tremendous proportions!

From little things big things grow...

The latest addition to the fleet.

Found a neat spot for the remote that lets me control the Lyr from my chair which sits at a right angle to the equipment rack.

I haven't been able to find many posts comparing Vali 3 vs Lyr+.

Are you able to elaborate a bit between the 2?

I have Lyr 3 and have been pondering if I need Vali 3 lol.
Not at this very early stage but give me a couple of weeks to gather some observations.
Preliminary discoveries - high gain* is the go for Grado RS1x and Lyr+ is a clean sounding device that encourages higher than necessary spl's when you're first getting to grips with it.
* Further listening has me favouring low gain with all three Grado.
