Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I wish Noval LISSTs were still available.
Tell me ‘bout it. I have four of them, two being prototypes that I managed to get my hands on. The other two I had to re-import from Malaysia. Absolutely worth it.

I have a good friend who is an audiophile snob and dealer in high-end equipment like Genesis, German Physiks, Merrill, Electrocompaniet, EMM Labs, Horning, etc... anyway I was talking to him about DACs and he made a distinctly disgusted noise at the mention of Schiit Audio. "You own that? Isn't it cheaply made?" he asked. No, I repleid, and also it sounds superb, better than my Wavelength or Aurender did. "No way," he insisted. I made him a wager - if he did not think the Yggdrasil was a great sounding DAC that competed with units costing 10X the price, I'd buy him a bottle of his favorite Don Julio 1942. If he would listen and admit it was a great piece of kit, he had to buy me a bottle of Bruichladdich Black Art. "You're on" he said. I set some ground rules about the listening test and told him I did not expect him to be honest about his results, but it was worth the cost of some 1942 just to know he had given the Yggdrasil a try. My Yggdrasil is going into its box and shipping to New Jersey tomorrow. :)

Be sure to let us know when you get your bottle of Bruichladdich Black Art. 😉

Perhaps, but just wait until Microsoft introduces their new vacuum cleaner. Remember their motto: Nothing sucks like Microsoft. 🤣

Man. There's issuing a challenge and then there's throwing the gauntlets down. Now I really need to hunt some down. 🤣

They’re not quite as good as some of my favorite noval tubes, but better than 95% of the rest of ‘em.

🤔, his audiophile world view is about to go to Schiit. Be sure to inform him afterwards, that is not even Yggdrasil's final form! 😏

I would also recommend trying a LISST while they’re available. I thought it sounded better than the couple of tubes I tried. Oh, and pick up a tube extender for ease of removal.
I did purchase a LISST along with the Saga+. I wanted to compare LISST with the original tube that came with the preamp. It's been a while now since I've used LISST so I've lost track of how it sounds. Thanks for the reminder, I should listen with it installed once again. The problem is like the Apos Select 6SN7 so much...LOL.

And Schiit quit making them...why?
Solid state tubes. That’s an oxymoron people didn’t quite know how to deal with. How can solid state be nearly as good as a great tube? And doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having tubes in the first place? (In short: no, because one amp, many flavors.) …and so they just didn’t sell well enough to keep in the lineup.

I was one of those who were a little perplexed at the time, but then again I had no knowledge regarding tube gear in general at that point.

RSTS/E was on PDP-11 but I think it worked on VAX too

@Ableza - make sure you tell him to leave it plugged in and on for however long it takes to fully warm.

I'm not that far from NJ. Can it stop at my house on the way back? I'll slip in some regular Bruichladdich... Or, how about same Islay Barley, we need to pick up some more of that...

(DD asks, for the nteenth time: Where's the CAN'T LIKE THAT button?)

After a limited amount of testing, I put a pair of (6SN7-configured) LISSTs in the "less impactful" side of my Freya+, and haven't been even a tiny bit tempted to swap them out for something else. And the best insurance against NOS tube shortages and/or prices that one could have.
