Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Maybe🤪 What I use is totally manual and you have to turn the motor on and off. Just the way it is. I have a couple where the motor starts when the arm is lifted, etc.
Then what I have is totally manual on steroids: you have to give the platter a manual push to get it spinning after you turn the motor on, manually. It *is* equipped with auto-stop though -- when you turn the motor off, it stops. 🤣

My first AR turntable (I have two) required a push. Otherwise the platter would happily spin backwards. In winter the AR required the heat of a 15 Watt lightbulb next to the tonearm pivot so that the arm would move at all. My newer AR has a small auxiliary motor to provide the push.

I promised to give my impressions on an Audio Technica AT-ART1000 cartridge used in conjunction with a Rega RB Titanium tonearm and in this case a Rega platter. Speakers were Sonus Faber Sonetto VIII G2’s with a Bowers and Wilkins DB4S subwoofer. Amp and preamp are custom made tube gear, and my group’s reference pieces. I will just say we used a tube phono preamp and leave it at that.

Four of us scored the gear using test music created for us and the average score was over 97 out of 100. All of our 25 criteria were brought to life in a stunning way. None of us concurred on what we might rate as less than perfect so basically there were few weaknesses. Now as far as general listening there was a true sense of being there with live music. The cartridge performed admirably. My choice of fun listening included Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Warren Zevon, and a couple RCA Red Seal records. Personally I listen closely to violin, sax, piano, bass and snare drums on various recordings and all were vibrant and well defined. The system we used did the turntable justice.
I have heard many great turntables and cartridges and this combo ranks among the top IMHO. A different platter might improve it but I am not sure I could hear the difference.

Only 200 of this cartridge are hand made per year so they are not always easy to find.

I am still debating accepting the turntable because one friend upped his offer for it and as @Adam Balm suggested the cartridge needs great care🤪

I might also add yesterday was great fun and the twins were well received in the audio lab. Oftentimes test subjects do not make it into that part of the building but this was not a comparison with other turntables.
I can only imagine how good the Audio Technica AT-ART 1000 cartridge is.

I have the AT- ART 20, which at around £2,700 in the UK, is £2,000 cheaper than the ART 1000, and it is superb!

How much gain on the phono preamp? Reason I ask is that is a super low output cartridge (0.2mv) and that is LOW. (I know I’d have to step up to Skoll’s 70dB gain to make that output work. Or did you use step up transformer?

Glad to hear it was so awesome (excellent selection of LP’s btw, the ones I’m familiar with are reference discs for me as well; you know my thoughts on RCA LSC’s. I loved every Sonus Faber I ever listened to, TBH. Plus, bonus? They are gorgeous.
I have no idea. Twins were there, I repeat twins!!!🤪

The cartridge output is .22 mv and 60 DB seemed to handle it just fine but then I am just pulling up specs and did not do the setup. I mostly listened and looked at the turntable. That is my story and I’m sticking to it.

I had to hear the recording you sent me of Scheherazade as a fun listen and it was breathtaking.

I do like to combine nice cabinetry with great sound as might be seen in some of my work.

I might be perfectly happy with the AT-ART 20 and you are certainly someone whose opinion I respect. I have been offered several shares of stock to add to my granddaughter’s college portfolio and I may take that and get something more in the $5k-10k range.
What turntable and arm do you have?

Hmmmm…. Dare I mention about the QSA Yellow 13amp fuse I’ve just bought….

Andrew
A 13 amp fuse? Is your amp rated in horsepower instead of watts? 🤣 🤣

Absolutely!

Okay, if you insist…

Years ago I was very naughty. …Very naughty. Using brass rods to bypass the 13 Amp fuses in my UK plugs. The results were glorious. Absolute glorious sound on a par to a component upgrade. But, there was that thought of burning the house down and the insurance company not being so happy.

Roll over to this week, and these QSA yellow fuses are doing the same thing, but with a CE electrical safety mark. Improving timing, boogie, more instrument separation, more tone and more bass.

I am well-happy!

Andrew
