Reminds me of Ice Storm '94 when I was living in Memphis; people were clearing supermarket shelves like it was the end of days!

1994 was my first winter in Nashville, transplanted from Chicagoland. I was billeted in a downtown apartment and commuted out 10 miles via interstate. The morning after the ice storm hit, I decided to stay on landed roads as the interstates were elevated. Came to one substantial hill and started driving up, then noticed that both sides were lined with cars off in the ditches. Damn ... it didn't seem that bad to me.

The B-3 really needs to be played through a Leslie!

I have a couple of friends who are talented keyboard musicians. One played with a variety of dance, Carolina beach, R&B bands. A career was developing/developed. He is an odd bird; could not stand traveling/touring. Mostly limited himself to playing within driving distance of home. This and other sources of income stymied him.

His instrument of choice is a Hammond B3. Last time I saw him (pre covid) he invited me to join him in his studio and showed off with his collection of B3s, Leslie speaker units and other amps/accessories. More than a dozen or so, mostly restored beyond new, some original and a few in waiting. I am not musically inclined. I wanted one of these glorious instruments.

He had set up a one man band kit. Others contributing guitar tracks and such, a drum machine and his keyboards. His downfall is he cannot sing, a vocorder made it all weird but huge fun. An entire R&B band in the room.

Praise for the B3.

This reminds me of an occasion back in the late ‘70s when I worked for HMRC here in the UK and was part of the team responsible for testing the London Airport cargo import systems which were based on an ICL System 4 computer and used drums for data storage. Which gives an indication of how old I am. We had a report that the software had crashed and when we investigated it was found that someone had entered exactly 100 items on a single manifest which happened to be the specified maximum number of items. This wasn’t anticipated as no one was ever expected to bring in 100 different items in a single shipment. Therefore the maximum limit of items hadn’t been tested for as it took a long time to create and enter all the test data. But it was always tested after that.
