End of the Year Wrapup, Giveaways, and Aegir 2 Preview

Hey guys,

It's that time of year again--time for the end of the year wrap-up, where I talk about what we did right, what we did wrong, and what's coming. (Or at least some of it.)

We'll also be giving away all of our analog products introduced in 2024 and all of our digital products introduced in 2024 to two lucky viewers. If things go as well as I hope, those are gonna be some very cool giveaways.

Oh yeah, and I'll have a pair of Aegir 2s that we can listen to (first articles--I expect we'll be shipping production shortly after the end of the year.)

I just noticed the tube that came with it is a clear top.

That’s a Russian tube, but hard to tell from the photo what factory it came from. Pretty decent tube regardless, IMO.

You either? I feel your pain.

I *did* win a nice gift card at a recent vendor event, but then found out our vendor sales guy had rigged the drawing to make sure I won something. So I kind of won, but not really. I’m gonna guess Schiit’s drawings are un-riggable, so it’s gonna be back to the norm.

Oscar Dunbar - Spring Rain. First 4 bass beat on the intro 0:00 - 0:03

Just got home and did the test already with the MIB. This is now confirmed and is isolated in my system: it is NOT the DAC or even the track's fault! It's SP2000's broken SPDIF out implementation!

Here's the troubleshooting steps I did to confirm it's the SP2000's fault and not the track nor the Yggy+ MIB's SPDIF receiver:

I took my collecting dust Wyred 4 Sound uLink USB to SPDIF converter use that from SP2000's USB out to uLink then toslink from uLink to MIB. Result: NO CLIPPING on the first 4 beats

Then I do the usual SP2000 toslink output to MIB input direct connection. Result: Clipping on that song at 0:00 - 0:03

I should be able to reproduce this issue when I go to work tomorrow with SP2000 hooked up to BF2 via USB against SPDIF. This will put the mystery in the coffin haha.

Just an update!

The same scenario happened with BF2 OG at work.

As a side note, I was able to A/B Audioquest Pearl USB cable going to Unison USB module vs Wireworld Supernova 7 Borosilicate Glass Toslink from the BF2 and lo and behold they’re identical!!!

That tells me that the source matters way more than the interface except for that specific Spring Rain track where SP2000 clips the signal on the first four bass beats with Toslink

Some DDCs are better performing with I2S or AES or vice versa while some are better with USB out. It could be that USB out from the Urd is worse than AES but with my SP2000 they’re identical except for the Spring Rain track intro
