Edit: seriously, Tyler's MBA program includes such "valuable" "wisdom" as "never price things to a standard margin, go for what the market will bear," and "always use maximum leverage, not your own cash." Yeah, have fun with those.
I liked my SoTM when I had it, then switched away from USB, then Schiit made Unison <grrr>
(re: "similar product" I would add "similar product by the same company". Perusing a thread of 130pp about the Wiim on another forum I see the same issues I had cropping up...)
Actually $399. Going for maximum crazy. Because we're dumb.

Yes, Unison and a $30 usb WiFi adapter makes the SoTM the perfect ready assembled Roon endpoint. I got mine for $350 on sale. I have about $250 into my Pi endpoint with the added software licenses. I had to piece it all together.
I agree with you. I want to believe these inexpensive “chi-fi” products live up to the hype. However, reality is often different.
I’d be cautious with using iPhone/iPad for endpoint, I found Roon would randomly stop and shut down on the idevice with long listening sessions.
I had my VW Jetta TDI upgraded with one. Alas, it only held 6 so I had to stop and swap cartridges to finish Harry Potter (don't go there, please). At least it wasn't raining....
