Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

We love having ours as well; an All Natural Dogs Treatz biz, that we decided to start to achieve "world domination" after the 2008 financial collapse. Seriously, I saw my retirement portfolio go to about 60% of what it was in the space of 6 weeks..... We decided to put that % of our income into something we were both passionate about.

Your book describes your path, but more importantly - we enjoy the *reasons* you made your decisions along the way.

Want to be happy? Be true to yourself (and those who work/mentor/support you).

Do you have Canadian distribution?

A friend had a portable apple computer with a 5" screen that must've been 60 lbs in the mid 90s. I was considering borrowing something, didn't really fit the bill for portable to me.

My first luggable. I still have it, it still works. Awkward to use at a coffee shop, also can't get any work done because of all the conversations it engenders.

( Wow does the Amazon Fire 10 ever take lousy pictures...!)

EDIT I can get it on my local network for storage (floppies **shudder**...) using a SCI-to-Ethernet adapter. It's about the size of a laptop power brick and needs its own power to operate.

I flew down to the Macworld trade show (RIP) and bought an 80MB external SCSI drive for US$1800. That was my first lesson in storage doubling: you need to double your storage every year. Right now I’ve got about 16TB scattered between half a dozen external drives, and I’m struggling with running out of space (Fwiw I have a 4TB drive of music and a matching backup drive).

Installing the True Multibit DAC card in Jotunheim v1
It's not hard at all... here's how to NOT hate LED 1 at the end of the process...
(of course, the multibit card isn't available from Schiit today, but if I don't capture this now, I'll forget...)

My amp is labeled SCH-14 | 1407363. YMMV.
  • Disconnect Joti from the mains, remove cables from connectors
  • Turn your volume knob to minimum (or max, if you wish)
  • Take a look at the bottom of your volume knob
    • See a set screw? Loosen it and remove the knob
    • No set screw? I have been told that some Jotunheims have a press-on knob... use a credit card to (gently) pry the knob off
  • Remove the hex nut on the volume control shaft
    • ...and don't lose the washer
  • Flip Joti over on its back (on a soft surface, please)
    • See the gap between the bottom flange of the top panel and the lower chassis?
    • Use a plastic sparger (or the like) to gently pry it apart...
      • There are four studs in the top cover that fit into keyhole slots in the top flanges of the chassis
      • When the lower chassis moves far enough - 1/4-3/8" - the studs will move into the larger part of the keyhole [ingenious design, IMHO]
  • Put Joti back on his feet again...
    • And remove the cover
    • If you've moved the cover far enough forward, it will be loose
      • and most importantly, LED 1 will be clear of the front panel
    • Maneuver the cover off, to clear the switches and the volume pot shaft
  • Take the "Reserved for Optional Input Card" sticker off the back of the chassis
  • Install the new USB-B cutout cover inside of the chassis...
    • It goes inside
    • Insert the black screw, and tighten it one turn to start it
      • Don't snug it yet
  • Install the card support post into the threaded socket in the motherboard
    • You can snug it sufficiently with your fingers, most likely
      • Don't crack the motherboard!
  • Got your static strap on? Ground yourself to the chassis
    • If you're good, you don't need one... just beware, YMMV
      • A static discharge across the wrong IC pins will likely be fatal to the card
      • (and they're hard to get, now)
  • Remove the card from the anti-static bag
    • Handle it only by the edges
  • Those header pins are long, be careful, they tend to get into the way... see them, back there behind the balanced headphone jack? I found that it makes good sense to get the card into the general position, then insert the nose of the USB-B jack into the hole in the back cutout... once the header pins are clear of the two black relay cases, you can swing the front of the card into position under the top chassis flange...
Joti_Header.JPEG

  • OK then - almost done installing the card. What, you say that the header pins don't align perfectly with the header on the motherboard? Well, if they don't, you're in the wrong position. Keep trying. When it's aligned correctly, very slight pressure directed along the length of the card (toward the back of the chassis), in combination with a very gentle push downward will seat the pins into the header
    • Install the silver flat-head screw, torque gently please
    • Snug the black button-head screw to secure the USB-B cutout cover
  • You're feeling good right now, right? Let me introduce you to LED 1
    • He goes into a tight-clearance hole in the front panel of the amp, and stands slightly proud when the cover is installed
    • NOTE: it is virtually impossible to get LED 1 into its hole without a bit of help...
    • So... thread the cover back over the volume pot shaft and the front-panel switches
    • And put the cover back on, with the studs positioned over the large opening in the keyhole...
    • DO NOT SIMPLY SLIDE THE COVER BACK INTO POSITION
      • because... LED 1!
Joti_adjuster_hook.JPEG

  • Flip Joti onto its back, again
    • I used a bent wire hook and a small but mighty LED flashlight...
    • The torch is positioned against the front face, so that the light shines directly through the front panel hole for LED 1
    • Move LED 1 gently into position by hooking his cylindrical light-pipe snout with the wire hook...
      • ...when he's in the proper position, the light-pipe will glow brightly!
      • Then, slowly slide the cover home, while ensuring that LED 1's snout ends up where it belongs...
        • (my lord, where did all that dust come from? Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa...)
Joti_LED_in-place.JPEG

  • Re-install the washer and the hex nut
  • Reinstall the volume knob in the correct position (and snug the setscrew, if your machine has one...)
  • Put Joti back on its feet, hook it up, and enjoy!
    • You saved $50, shipping and a week without your amp. Have a beer, you deserve it!

Congratulations on your retirement. Like we retirees like to say, working for a living is highly overrated.

Wow, big step ... congrats. In your case, I am not concerned that you will be eaten up by boredom.
