Ahh. 75 baud modems. Brings back memories.

JC
My first 'portable' for work had a 300 baud modem. Pager goes off around 2 am, couple the phone, dial in, watch 2 80x24 screens paint one pixel at a time, log off and drive 30 minutes to the data center. I can semaphore flag faster than 300 baud

The term "cognitive ability" combined with my name is generally met with polite laughter and/or sideways glances with raised eyebrows. You win this round :L3000:

Edit: I'll bet the memory of beeps and squeals gave many of you flashbacks.

I am going to say I am young enough that one of the first computers I used was a laptop. Still with dialup and the like, but it was a laptop. Now the 170 Mbps down/355 Mbps up is a little weird on a 300/300 service but it does what I need and more (something something cheaper than lower speed due to data caps!).

I'm young enough that my first computer was an IMSAI 8080. Unless you count the PDP-11.

My second job was in the tech dept at an early computer store, circa 1979. I've probably assembled 8 or so IMSAI 8080s. I held the shop record for shortest time to solder the 22 S-100 sockets onto the backplane with no shorts and all joints correctly done. 46 minutes.

I kinda miss my old PDP-11/23. Though the RL02 disk drives were kinda big....

IBM 360 here. Punch cards to paper tape, tape read into dial-up modem/coupler/handset to remote 360.

IBM 360 as well - Wash State University. Suffered through 3 semesters of punch cards, then discovered a new unused X.25 terminal in the chem building :). PDP8 and really schiity tape readers for labs.

BTW - My first computer: TI 99/4A with cassette storage and 300 baud (I think) acoustic coupler modem.

I will say this, I handed down my Magni/Modi 2U set to my brother with a small set of bookshelf Klipsch speakers and a cheap Dayton Audio amp. Seems his neighbor during exams this week decided to blare their speakers late at night starting about 1130 pm.

So my brother decides to blare screamo dubstep through the system pointed at the common wall. He proceeds to claim it was shaking the door.

He could not say how well the Magni/Modi played it though, I know the Dayton amp is noisy and he had earplugs in.

Fun Fact. baud doesn't really mean the same as bits per second. Go figure. Blame the French, as usual.

Memories of working on a computer over modem and teletype/printer. No matter how slow the modem was the printer was slower. i...t...w...a...s...s....o....v....e...r...y...p...a...i...n...f...u..l.

Then, horrible flashbacks mid-late 90s with the Indonesian 133baud teletypes at Dow Jones. Which our project converted to Internet Protocol packets. It was very strange to see a text window on a PC g..o.....a..s......s..l..o..w.....a..s.....a.....t..e..l..e..t..y..p..e........
