Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

@Jason Stoddard , Are the Modi 3 RCA outs in the same physical position as the Modi Multibit?

I've been wanting to bring my Mimby back to my music listening rig and out my gaming rig, but it's paired with a Magni 3 using an Introprose rigid connector and would like to continue using that for stacking reasons. Was considering a Modi 2 Uber earlier but the Modi 3 seems even better (less expensive, can power it from the TV and have it automatically power on when I turn on the TV, might sound better).

@CAPT Deadpool

I’ve tried a LOT of lightning extension cables. I’ve sunk more time into this than I care to admit. I’ve even considered buying regular cables and splicing some female ports at the ends myself, but haven’t gotten that far.

The best cable I’ve tried so far is made by Cellularize and can be found on Amazon in black or white in 3’ or 6’ lengths. I’ve only tried the 3’ myself.

Here is the link:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073Z1DFMB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_BVBPBbCAJ255G

The only reason I like it is because the exterior build quality is better than other ones I’ve tried. But it’s pretty bad at charging the phone and they die every so often. You then have to get a new one or go through the effort of contacting their customer service.

If you find anything better let me know. I have dreams that Apple will make their own lightning extension cable, or more realistically, an iOS device USB adapter that doesn’t have a fixed lightning cable attatched. But rumors are the new iPad Pro’s will transfer over to USB C. Which is great for anyone that buys it. But it also dashes any hopes I have of improving the weak link in my frankenstein Schiit car audio setup.

No, because they were for work they had to be closed back headphones...

LOL. Yeah, I had to go to closed (AKG 553 from Massdrop, the only closed-back 'phones I own) because I was causing a "disruption" at work (people were singing along with the sound leaked from my 6XX and Grados). :gs1000smile:

While many people do enjoy the experimentation of "tube rolling", there are other, more fundamental reasons for utilizing vacuum tubes for audio amplification.

Most average triode tubes are much more *intrinsically* linear amplification devices…

Being a tube/analog specialist, I simply tend to blab more about tube stuff...
Thanks for the delineation and subsequent insights in your post.
I for one really enjoy this sort of exploration.
Being presented with a multitude of different and varied ways of viewing and understanding HOW a device works is, at least for me, instructive to say the least.

The one aspect to tubes that seems critical to understanding what tubes ARE and how they operate, is that they are voltage devices that oh yeah will pass along some current, you know, just to make the circuit work.
This is in distinct contrast to SS, which are current operated devices that oh yeah will pass along the voltage, ya know as a carrier for the current to flow.

And that the music we listen to is a modulation of voltage, that, oh yeah the required amount of current needs to be supplied in order to 'work' properly.

And that voltage operated devices tend to distort in even order harmonically related ways, while current devices tend to distort in odd order harmonically related ways.
And granted there are exceptions and work-arounds and designs to compensate, but at their root, silicon based vs vacuum based active devices operate diametrically opposite each other.

An example of this is my Rok amp which has 100,000µfd of PSU capacitance, where as my BIG iiiiirrrrrnnnnn amp has 800µfd in it's PSU.
The SS design NEEDS current dumping capability, whereas my tube amp needs a voltage swing of 300vdc.

Jumping down these kinds of rabbit holes is fascinating to me, especially when I get to integrate new insights.

Thanks for sharing your musings.

JJ

Gods, I’m glad you have a sense of humour (and a thick skin). ‘Cause you know what feeding the animals gets you... Can’t unsee that...

I’ve just ordered my Yggy Jr (Mimby) via Schiiteu. They are showing graded stock of these, plus Modi 2 Uber, and Magni 3. I was tempted by the Magni, but seeing as I hardly use headphones I passed. It would look good on the Schiit stack though!

I did the same, got the HE4XX out of curiosity, on impulse, what I found is although most bits are there - bass, treble etc., they don't do music like my beloved HD650.

As a further aside I just got another pair of headphones, Audiofly AF240, they were $299 but I got them new for $70 and they may be the only Australian headphones (ever?) so I couldn't resist, very different from HD650, but kinda bassy and fun now they are run-in (sounded like tin cans out of the box :slight_frown:) 16 Ohm closed, prolly sound as good out of a phone as out of the Jot.

Thanks for reminding me about another stalled project :disappointed:, putting modern drivers in an old pair of Realistic NOVA PRO headphones, the worst sounding headphones I can remember ever hearing.:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

LOL my project worked well but it did not require a lot of alteration or dampening. I also have some other Beyers (Darth Beyer) that someone modified and sold on a fairly large scale I suspect, kind of like the early days of people modifying Fostex before having their own drivers made.

Hahaha, the stuff I listen to at work people definitely wouldn't be singing along to, they would most likely be wanting to string me up...

@Jason Stoddard

PLEASE at least make a small run of these, (even if it's at a small premium, I'm sure there's enough crazies errr enthusiasts in this thread that would buy them) I'd prepay for one right now...

Yes, I know it's just a Mimby with a different screen print...

@Jason Stoddard

Can anyone over at Schiit give an ETA for Modi 3 arriving on European Schiit site? Lot of my buddies in Finland/Netherlands been refreshing the site constantly, I told they probably need to wait a couple weeks. Anyways, if you could let me know so I can get the message out, cheers!

Hey, now! I used to sell those, back in college. :L3000: Never had a pair come back. I suspect they sounded no worse than other $30 headphones (for the masses) of the time.

Here are a couple things everyone loves hearing about, Coaster amps and VU meters!

First off is my Coaster table top, I figured with the use of some buss bars and AC I could turn this version of the Coaster into a combination cook surface and dining table. It is a constant battle to keep my cats from jumping on a table so this should be a pretty good deterrent. Also it should help with dinner guests who insist on putting their elbows on the table, one elbow should be fine, but two will complete the circuit and voila, elbows off of the table. The second item, and the serious one, is a current project that I hope to finish today for a friend. Quartered oak, hard to find ALPs pots and VU meters. Another plate will have room for six female RCA jacks. table5.0[2937].jpg IMG_0089.jpg:smile_phones:

This type of work requires some knowledge of woodworking, metallurgy, chemistry, and electronics or the ability to convince others you have such skills.
