I love the meters on the front of my Accuphase P-4200 power amp. Very 1970s retro.




I know they are just audio bling - but I LIKE this bling.

Accuphase is one of the best in the business and actually worth its price of admission. I bet even the Schiit people respect them.

  If you use a Mac with a display to play your music and you want VU meters you could check out Spectre.
 
And if you have a Schiit DAC connected to your computer you've solved your problem 
 

 

I did a quick search on VST-compatible VU meters and came up with this, for quite a bit less than Spectre (i.e. free).

Disclaimer: I have not tested this product, and as far as I know iTunes does not support VST plugins. A lot of other audio apps do, however.

If you are in pro audio, you are surrounded by meters.  They're not all too useful for Hi-Fi (though they are cool), but they are definitely essential in the pro audio world.

For me, meters are useful when creating / recording / editing / mastering music / sound and redundant when reproducing it. I need meters when I'm recording stuff to monitor levels, headroom, clipping, etc. Once the final version has been created, however, at playback time I have no need for meters.
 
On domestic reproduction equipment they are technically unnecessary. Shiny and pretty, sure, for those that like that sort of thing, but unnecessary.
 
For instance, if you're old enough to remember cassette recorders, imagine making a mixed tape without meters. But there's no need for them on your power amp.
 
I don't want none of that sh¡t on my Schiit, especially since it means it'll increase prices.

Had the Yaggy running for a little over a week now and it has more than replaced the Bricasti M1. I think it matches the Bricasti in what it did best (detail / dynamics / punch) while also doing more elsewhere (smooth & natural sound / sound staging / separation). Given the price difference, that is kinda amazing and I am kicking myself for spending a lot more cash for a lot less DAC with the Bricasti. Oh well, have sold the Bricasti and Yaggy will now be my DAC for quite a while, I think.
 
The fatigue issue I was having with the Bricasti + Utopia combination is no longer a factor with the Yaggy. At last I can appreciate what an amazing headphone the Utopia is. This is the only headphone I have heard that beats the modded HE6 (well driven).
 
The Yaggy would rate as one of my better audio purchases. On a bang for the buck measure, probably about the best (at least right up there with the HE6).

Honestly, though, until we see how Vidar goes over with everyone, it'd be silly to start designing anything else. At least on a detailed level. But there are some things we could do with a larger budget that are fairly obvious (more power, duh) and some things that are not very obvious, but could be some real game-changers. At least in my mind.
 
But first, we'll make Vidar as amazing as we can, and get it shipping, and see what happens after that. What we learn on Vidar will definitely shape any future products. But we haven't learned anything yet, other than several ways to NOT make an amp.

Yeah, better to have dreamed than not, based on what my life taught me so far...
 
Anyway, what ways have you all learnt not to make an amp based on Vidar? Or rather, what challenges you are facing with Vidar as compared to the smaller desktop amps?
