The Crack w/ speedball is a heavenly upgrade to the 6XX, IMO. On solid state, the 660S2 adds much more bass impact and generally feels like an upgrade, but at the slight expense of some of that buttery midrange smoothness (so it’s not without compromise, and doesn’t seem as magical on tubes as the 6XX).Very good to hear this. My mind is being molded and shaped into a better thing today! Love that.
I'm loving what I'm hearing from the HD6XX, just wish they had more bass presence, authority, and wallop. Like, there are lower frequencies there and I'm hearing them, but they sound like they're next door, not in the space with all of the other frequencies. My Final E5000 are not like that - the bass frequencies have absolutely as much presence and importance as every other frequency in a song. It's my favorite aspect of those IEMs.
I'm just realizing that my ears have started disliking the pressure of IEMs properly inserted so I've borrowed the HD6XX as an exploration back to over-ear 'phones. I just need a more complete package frequency response-wise than the 6XX provides.
I'm open to anybody's suggestions in the sub-$500-ish range that pair well with a Magni+.
Not these?

An adapter must be used, 12a*7 to 6dj8/6922. 12au7 and 12at7 work in V2+, 12ax7 has too much gain, imo.Is the 12AU7 really compatible with the 2+, or is that a “use at your own risk” kind of situation?
In the past when I’ve contacted Schiit support about compatible tubes, that wasn’t one of the families on their list…
Well said. In the meantime I hope to rebuild a classic turntable or two so I have a Skoll on the way. I am very impressed with its size and capabilities.Come on, people!!! Really? How about a little self-control. It really isn't that hard to just stop the politics and nonsense. I'm the poster child for lack of self-control and I manage to restrain my political posting.
** I suggest a perm ban and blacklisted from buying Schiit gear.
FTFY.I wonder how much of a boost toGDPworld population we would see if this thread is shut down.
Well, I'm not sure what happened since I've been off-line for a few days, so I guess it wasn't me. Time to fire up some music! One more political thing or ad hom insult and I'll pause this thread for a week or two.
Relax. Enjoy life. I'm not enjoying being the gatekeeper here.
If you have never used a tubed amp at all before, I suggest trying the lowest cost one first. If it sounds good to you, there are upgrades available as far as your budget will stretch and soon to be more! But why spend more than you have to as an experiment? By a Vali and see if you like it.Here's a question on tubes: I have some headphones and I want to try tubes: do I go for a Valhalla 2, a Vali 3, or wait for Valhalla 3? Put a different way, should my first tube product be a hybrid or otl (or otl/ocl) product?
