Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

And, take plenty of pictures of the packed item before sealing the box. Take a closeup picture of the serial number too. These two tips are for your records and protection against potential scammers.
Can Schiit track the original order number from the unit serial number?

As @AstronomerXI noted, US Audio Mart is a good place to start. Free, and gets a good bit of traffic. I've bought and sold several times through them with good experiences. Audiogon used to be a great place, but their fees kept climbing and I don't know what kind of traffic they get now. Haven't visited in quite a while. Worth a look, perhaps. There's always the classifieds here at Head-Fi depending on what you're selling. It's also free. Ebay will get you the biggest audience, but they have the highest fees and also the biggest audience of scammers. Ebay is also now sending the IRS your sales revenue information so that income taxes can be collected if you sell in excess of $20k. Probably not an issue for most of us, but the IRS is also considering changing that threshold to $5k for 2024 (this directly from Ebay's FAQ page), so just an FYI. Ebay does have both buyer and seller protections in place, so it may be worth the price of their fees if having that is important. I've never sold anything through Amazon so can't comment on that.

The price to charge is hard to answer. Depends on what it is, how popular it is, how old it is, etc etc. Some things can get you 85 - 90% of the original selling price, and some things you may have to price at 50% to get it to sell. Best thing to do is scout the sites for comparable pieces and see what they're being listed for.

I always use PayPal for these transactions. Just what I do, not saying it's the best or only way. PayPal has protection mechanisms in place that can help you from getting burned, although even with that there are no absolute guarantees. My only advice here is that if anything during the process with a potential buyer causes a red flag to pop up, listen to your instincts and walk away. There will always be another buyer. Ship only to the registered address they have with PayPal (or whoever you use for payment) -- never ship to a different address ("I want to send it to my buddy's house so my wife doesn't see it" kind of crap). Major red flag.

Shipping only CONUS is your call. Much easier with fewer chances of problems and/or having to deal with customs/fees/duties, but you'll limit your audience a bit too.

Lastly, make sure the item is well packaged for shipping and be sure to insure it with a delivery signature required. Even if it's only an item you're selling for $100, spend the extra few dollars to be sure you have a good paper trail.
Thanks for this info!

Hey all,

Just a brief moment to note the passing of the Yggdrasil OG. It has gone into the ether, after one of the longest DAC runs in history.

If you missed it, and still want one, I suspect a couple will end up on B-Stock. If you want something with the same D/A converters, the Yggdrasil GS2 will continue to be available until we are out of Analog 1 boards. I won't estimate a time for that; see Jason's Law.

Beyond that, Yggdrasil LIM and MIB live on!

All the best,
Jason
Hello @Jason Stoddard -- Any rough ideas on when we might see MIB cards available as an upgrade? I know Jason's Law and all, but maybe a scientific wild-ass guess? :D

I had a pair of "wow" moments with my Schiit last evening, which is leading me to a question (that likely only I can answer).

The audio chain was the Mac Mini->Gumby->Freya N with Telefunken ECC88's->Lokius->Magni Piety->Hifiman Sundara headphones. I was listening to Neil young's "American Stars 'n Bars" album when "Will to Love" came on. While listening to it, I was hearing the occasional loud noise. I thought it was my youngest Border collie having a case of the zoomies and tossing his hard Nylabone around the family room's hardwood flooring on the other side of the wall. It was distracting so I took off the phones and...silence. Phones back on - the loud noise. Off - silence. Turns out Neil recorded the song in his cabin in front of a lit fireplace. I was hearing the pop and crackle of the fire that sounded so 3D I thought it was in the next room.

Next up was Frank Zappa's "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Volume 1" Now, the Sundaras don't have a particularly wide sound stage. I use my AKG 712 Pro's for when I want wide, usually for live recordings and Jazz. Frank started talking at the beginning of the first track and his voice was wayyy outside my head, like 3-4 feet to my left at the 9:30-10:00 position. I had to look at the headphone stand to see if I was mistaken when I thought I put on the Sundaras. Nope. The 712's were still on the stand. Even so, I had never heard sound appear so wide before. The music continued and extended that gorgeous 3d-width. Insert Schiit-eating grin here.

Both instances were very 3D, a sure combo of the Gumby and Freya N + Tubes + recording. I was and am thrilled that I'm getting so much out of the Schiit stack. The Gumby has been an absolute game changer for my listening.

So, the question I'm struggling with is, if this pair of mid-fi cans (plus the HD-650's in the other stack, and Ghosts in my basement office) are giving me such joy end enjoyment, do I need to look at higher-end cans? I have been seriously looking at Focal Clear MG's, Hifiman Arya Organic, and the Sennheiser HD 800S, all the same price at about $2k Canadian (ouch!). my wallet is burning a hole in my pocket. I haven't heard any of these yet but I'm wondering with my tinnitis and lower acuity in my left ear, will the difference between what I have and the higher-end cans be that much greater and obvious? Will I get that much more out of the music, hear more, etc, or am I chasing that additional 5-10% more for 4x the cost of curent cans? How diminishing are the returns here? Something I'll be pondering for a little while as I obsesssivley read up on those headphones and likley others.
Is that experience repeatable? Can you listen again to the same tracks in the same room conditions and about the same time of the day say in a couple of days and verify?

The crackle track and the Frank Zappa album recording both are phenomenal, repeatable at most condition.

That’s not the point. I’m interested in the overall system response as perceived by the listener.
I see, you mean the system, sorry, I got it wrong.

Agree 100%. My Gumby is an A1 with audio piped to it via a M1 Mac Mini and a DDC to Gumby's COAX in. Add some wonderful tubes to the Freya and I'm near the end game. I still want to add a Mjolnir 3 to the stack this year. Lots of other Schiit on my wish list, but for now, the listening in my main Schiit stack is fantastic.
May I ask, what DDC you use in that chain?

I need some advice on selling some excess equipment I've accumulated.

In all the years I've been in this hobby I've never sold anything, I just gave unwanted items away, and stuff I liked died a natural death or went on the shelf as Designated for Assignment.

That shelf is starting to heave a bit now, so it's time for a cull.

First, where is the best place to sell, in your experience? Are eBay or Amazon viable options?

How do you price it, assuming near NIB condition?

What precautions do you take when selling it?

How do you receive payment?

Is selling CONUS only a good strategy?

Most of the stuff I have will be three digit priced, so it won't be the end of the world if a deal goes south.
I've sold on Head-Fi with good results. Amazon is hard (impossible?) for a small seller nowadays.

I insist on conUS only, only ship to approved addresses.

I was reading and very tired from only 3.5 hours sleep the previous night. We'll see if the 3D effect and width/depth is perceived the same when well-rested and focusing on the music and expecting the effect.

I just got a 1099-K form from eBay for 2023, and it's less than $2000. I guess it's still $600 limit like it was it 2022.
Interesting. Your state must have a lower reporting threshold. I thought it was a federal-directed tax thing, but apparently the individual states can set their own limits.

One thing after reading a little further: in 2024, sales exceeding $600 for the year will result in a 1099-K. Not $20k and not $5k, but $600. That's been the same threshold number for years for other miscellaneous income, but now it applies to Ebay sales as well. So you bought something with income that had already been taxed, and now if you want to sell it you get to pay income tax again for however much you sell it for. Just peachy. I'll stop there so as not to violate forum policies. But Grrrrrrr. :frowning2:

I reached out to the seller and he replied very quickly. He said to try cleaning the leads, holding the tube upside down and tapping on the bottom, switching the tubes in the Freya etc. He said he's send me another tube if the issue persists.

However, it looks like a manufacturing defect. The filament crosses to both sides and is essentially an actual lightbulb:

I'd say you have a one-of-a-kind collectible there!
