One of my favorite HiFi writers / reviewers / photographers, Michael Lavorgna, who plies his trade on his website Twittering Machines, offers up perhaps my favorite commentary regarding measurements in his recent review of the Rockport Atria II loudspeakers when he said,

"And if you think you can gauge a speaker’s performance from a set of measurements, I want you to imagine the difference between reading that the largest male elephants can weigh up to 15,000 pounds and having one sit on your head."

👏

I remember him from one of the mags. Now, who can improve upon prose such as
I’ve heard tube amps that sound harsher than skeletons copulating on a tin roof

What's the best option for adding a headphone to a Yggdrasil/Loki Max/Freya+ stack? Can I plug it into the rear outputs of the Freya? Should I hang a Magni+ in between them?
Throw a Ghorn off the Freya and be careful with the gain if you use Grado ....

I was just listening to his “Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar” (disk 1 of 3) this evening. Utterly brilliant.

He stole that phrase from British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, describing the sound of a harpsichord.

Tonight's Skoll selection. Amazing vocalist. With Herbie on keys!

Been really fun running a Nagaoka moving magnet cart to change things up a bit. I gotta say, with my budget I'm strongly considering just going the MM route for a while. Seems like more bang for the buck. No re-tipping needed w replaceable stylii! And it's coming back to me now how much more punch they seem to have. Almost like MM:multibit, MC:delta-sigma in some ways (*ducks*). Your mileage (and budget) may vary of course 🙂

You have to push down a little when you place your Gungnir on top of your Mjolnir 2. You will hear a bit of a crunch. That’s fine, it’s when you know that it fully settled in place.
Oh no !!! ... you mean, I've been doing it wrong all these years !! :scream:

I think this wonderful description was first used by the conductor, Sir Thomas Beecham who died in 1961.

“The sound of a harpsichord – two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm. ”

Some more of his droll humor....

During a rehearsal, conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who died 40 years ago, thought that his female soloist was playing less than adequately on her fine Italian cello. He stopped the orchestra and declared: "Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands, and all you can do is scratch it!" On another occasion he declared that "the British may not like music, but they absolutely love the noise it makes". His pointed goatee beard, his proud and portly stature and, most of all, that dry, acerbic wit have passed into musical mythology. No other conductor could possibly have got away with saying: "There are two golden rules for an orchestra: start together and finish together. The public doesn't give a damn what goes on in between."
