Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Congrats should go to Mike, Dave, and Ivana, as well as alpha (USB switcher) and beta users, and Evan and Asa for their chasing of the bugs. I basically just did the industrial design on this one.

I am curious about what people think about variants, especially the USB switcher side. Not that there's anything in process; it's just we have some new tech to play with. Let us know.
2x isolated USB in to 1x isolated USB out all the way!
That would kill the (way too expensive) galvanic isolator gizmos and provide a most welcome switching feature.

Isolated, I think, is the problem in a Modi-sized box. The alphas weren't isolated.

Oh, alright. We just went ahead decided that was fact, huh?
run your own tests, with both optical and coaxial links connected and select the input (link) via the DAC. toslink and RCA coaxial should sound the same, but they don't. IMO, the optical sounds "smoother" but there is also less ambient and low-level information present.

if you have optical sources, or still want to use optical, then consider one of these devices

an interesting test would be to daisy-chain several of these devices using exclusively optical or coaxial connection and compare the audio quality. or keep increasing the number of devices and links until the signal is no longer reliable.

It works with 2 inputs--that's the test board we sent out, like, a billion years ago, to check the basic concept of USB hubbishness.

I wonder if more USB inputs would be better. Also SPDIF out. Probably could pull out data like sample rate, etc too. But then that's Jotunheim sized.

More inputs can’t be bad.

I’m ambivalent about having a display for sample rate, etc. it would be one of those things that’s I’d look at and think “huh, neat I guess” and then never give it a second thought. Others will certainly disagree though.

I bet they would put it on the top front so they don't break the "promise" of never having a product with a front power switch

Schiit can finess that moral breach of faith by building devices that do not have a built-in power switch at all.

$15 USD retail to buy a wireless remote that controls an electrical electrical outlet. So wholesale maybe $6 ? Could even be an optional add-on, at least for some types of gear. I've turned my Yggy off exactly twice in three years. I could have unplugged it.

For all 3, or even just the 2 inputs?
Given that many modern DAC have their own USB isolation, you could forgo the isolation on the output. In any case, that device could be on the same power outlet as the DAC and you wouldn't need isolation.

Edit:
You might have some luck fitting several TI ISOUSB211 isolators. They're 28-pin SSOP.

Would be tempted to grab a URD but after waiting 18 months my DNA Starlett should be ready by the end of this month,
so that money's already dedicated. Very excited about the URD though and looking forward to early listening impressions!
Also waiting for the Mjolnir 3 to arrive. 😊

I can say after 18 months of owning the Starlett, that you're in for a real treat. Tubes rule... And Donald has done a masterful job with his amp.
