+100Tool.
+100Tool.
I do not know what the amp is - I was just saying that it is the same impedance as a Vidar, so it should work swimmingly.Did not know amp was vidar, in that case 3.3Hz is -3dB point, for both stereo and monoblock (xlr balanced to vidar) use cases. Not significant.
FWIW loudspeakers have LF fall-off at 2x (sealed box) or 4x (ported) logarithmic rates below Fs
Ha!There are some older pieces that sound very good but as time goes on I wonder if they are reaching their full potential. I spent a couple days listening to Carver gear from the 80's knowing full well the caps were 40 years old.![]()
Actually I built several WHAMMY's. Wayne is a really great engineer...a wonderful design...I see you built a Whammy!
Under the right circumstances and using some very good test music A/B testing can tell a lot IMHO. When a large group shows similar results, then you know you might be doing it well.
Oh and Elacs with 1-3 watts do nicely in a 20x30ft area.

I just started an amp build, my design. I have some wild ideas on the cabinet and copper work so we will see how it goes. My shop audio system is nearly done so I will have entertainment.Actually I built several WHAMMY's. Wayne is a really great engineer...a wonderful design...
Sorry - I WANT to understand this - what is Fs?
Prog?! Oh yes, indeed! You mentioned many of my favorites. In response, I see Egg was mentioned immediately, as well as Alan Holdsworth, so I'll throw in other Canterbury and classic British '70s prog off the top of my head:Since this thread has been a good source for music recommendations, I wonder if there are any fans of Prog Rock here? I've been a progressive music fan for decades; YES, ELP, Rush, Genesis, King Crimson, and Kansas; I'm a big fan of them all. But, I'm not to up on as much modern Prog. I've only heard a few newer bands; I.Q., Porcupine Tree (and Steven Wilson), Dream Theater and Anima Mundi. I like electronic, space music, New Age and fusion too. Any other bands that I should look out for?
Thanks.![]()
Ahhh…ya got me!!! Thanks for that snarky but informative answer.
Prog?! Oh yes, indeed! You mentioned many of my favorites. In response, I see Egg was mentioned immediately, as well as Alan Holdsworth, so I'll throw in other Canterbury and classic British '70s prog off the top of my head:
- Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Caravan, Gilgamesh, Gong (and Steve Hillage solo), Hatfield and the North, Camel, National Health, Gentle Giant
Then there's RIO (Rock In Opposition):
- Henry Cow, Slapp Happy (and all various combinations and solo efforts), Art Zoyd
- the Cueniform label has tons I've only begun to explore (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuneiform_Records_discography):
Thinking Plague, Univers Zero (Belgium), U Totem (and spinoffs), Present, Djam Karet, Doctor Nerve, Frith/Kaiser, Hamster Theater
And trying to step beyond the Anglo-American bias:
- Area (Italy), Le Orme (Italy), Premiata Forneria Marconi (Italy), Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (Italy), Deus Ex Machina (Italy), Arti & Mestieri (Italy), Locanda Delle Fate (Italy), Can (Germany), Magma (France), Happy Family (Japan), Nekropsi (Turkey), Solaris (Hungary), Triana (Spain)
(My thanks go out to Brandon Wu for turning me on to many of these international artists. Thanks Brandon!)
And so much more!
- Happy the Man, Ozric Tentacles, Mars Volta, Ozone Quartet, Gordian Knot, Spastic Ink, and the myriad of King Crimson spinoffs (ProjeKcts) and solo efforts (Liquid Tension Experiment, Stickmen, Belew, Bruford).
It's all too much....
Liquid Tension Experiment: Dream Theater without lyrics. Thanks!
Happy the Man, Ozric Tentacles, Liquid Tension Experiment, Stickmen; three of my other favorites. Happy the Man was even a local band for me. I just wish I knew who they were at the time...!![]()

Looks like I am not the only one to also get new speakers to use with the Gjallarhorn. (I picked up some Klipsch R-41M for nearfield on my desk too.)I'm very excited to say that I just received new-to-me KEF Q150 speakers and a new Gjallarhorn! I'm using them near-field on my desk fed with a Bifrost 2 and Asgard 3. I'm coming from a pair of KRK Rocket 5 powered monitors and these KEFs are much more resolving by far. I'm quite impressed (as someone who usually listens with Sennheiser HD800s). As to power, with the Asgard in low gain my maximum comfortable listening volume is right at the end of the pot's travel. In high gain they far exceed what I'd consider to be a safe volume for even a moment. So it seems like there's ample headroom on the amp's power for Q150s in the near-field.
So it would but be "flat" at ~13hz? My amp isn't an Aegir or Vidar. They have 44k balanced input impedance. My amp is 22k. Just want to make sure I'm not messing up. The load is too low for my D. Sachs DS2 tube linestage.LF roll off -3dB point is about 6.6Hz, assuming 2.2uF output coupling / dc blocking output cap per phase
