Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

But in the case of Tyr, I don't think you should shop for one because you're looking for power. If power is what you want, dual-Vidars actually get you more power than you'd get with Tyrs. (Mono-Vidar is 400 Watt RMS into 8 ohm, Tyr's "only" 200 Watt RMS into 8 ohm.)

Ahhh yes, I had forgot how powerful mono Vidars truly are.

For me, buying amps has mostly been about dynamic power and clarity. Or because they’re tube amps that I can customize and build however I like. None of my speakers are difficult loads so that’s not an issue.
The descriptions of larger soundstage and more fleshed out detail are definitely speaking my language for amp performance.
Like others have said, all Schiit needs to do is make a choke input stereo amp with similar performance, lower power, lower cost, and you can count me in!

I'm actually not sure that's as trivial as it may sound.

I'm still reading up on how chokes work in the first place, but from my understanding you'll need two of them in a stereo amp and the choke's size doesn't necessarily get considerably smaller with smaller power draw.

I could be wrong in either of the two points, but if I'm right, a stereo amp with choke-input would have an even larger footprint and be considerably heavier than one Tyr. Which would also mean that you might not actually end up with something that's meaningfully cheaper, either.

(Which is also why I'm not particularly hopeful to ever see a headphone amp with choke-input, as much as I'd love to try one.)

Buzzkiller. ☹️

You're probably right, however. Looks like Freya S and mono Aegirs may be my endgame.

This is ver 2 of my Tyr rack. A Yggy will sit in the lower space on a 2” thick 5’ long maple table (not shown here). The wood slats are reinforced with metal; it is rabbited underneath so you can’t see them. The feet have Isolate It: Sorbothane discs incorporated into them. Each Try will also have Sorbothane feet. Can't wait for delivery Tuesday.

What Tyr does for me is the detail delivery and the fact that I no longer have to worry about my low-ish (dropping to 3.2 ohm) impedance speakers being plugged into mono blocks that aren't really officially rated for anything that drops that far below 8 ohm.

If all you want is power, I'd go for dual-Vidars. They're cheaper, require a lot less real estate, and deliver more Wattage into 8 ohm.

For everything else, you can't go wrong with Tyr.
+100.

I've been buying and enjoying (or not) and selling audio equipment as my main hobby for over 40 years. <- hard to believe bc I act like I'm 15.
Unless something changes radically around here, I currently own my end-game DAC and my end-game monoblocks.
Thanks to my friends at Schiit, those three amazing machines cost about 63% of what my current speakers cost - delivered to my door!

If I have a really good year at work... I can think of some speakers that I'd love to own. In the meantime, I'm ready to stop screwing around schlepping gear, reconfiguring racks and obsessing over cable dressing and just listen to music.
(BTW The Beatles Get Back (The Rooftop Performance) is definitely worth a listen!)

p.s. - if you have high-efficiency speakers, and want the best of both worlds... go with dual-Aegirs for 1/2 the price of a pair-O-Tyrs.
(You're still not going to have the choke-input-PS experience, but knowing that it's available might be enough...)

Looking inside of Ragnarok 2... with some re-arranging, looks like there might be room for a choke in there...

[Jason probably blocked me permanently for that comment :)]

Today I am trying some versions of the 6sl7 on the gain side in a Freya +. I have several types I forgot I owned, amongst which are a pair of these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/265107671759?hash=item3db9a60acf:g:HfUAAOSw07BgZMWf

I think those came from you know who too. I have one or two left in the stash if needed. 20 years ago, 6SL7's were as popular as 6SN7's, and prices were roughly comparable between them. Then the demand dropped off (fewer new designs using them I suppose), and prices went down considerably. These days you can get nice NOS versions for half (or less) of a similar vintage/manufacturer of a 6SN7.

I need to get Finnegan started on an amp for him and I will make an attempt to let @golfbravobravo hear it first, just to make sure it is good enough for Bill.

Well, there goes that. Yet another amp that will never be seen again. Well, except for the occasional photo from @golfbravobravo captioned 'nyah nyah nyah'.

I have been considering those too. But then I would also need a balanced preamp. I tried Freya-S last year but it mysteriously raised the noise levels of my system.🤔 (Still not sure if I got a bad one. I really liked it but the noise was too much.) It’s been challenging finding a good preamp that I can afford.
I also have about $2k worth of other improvements to get to as well. I know. 1st world problems.

There is always that chance. He is in North Carolina, maybe you can drive there on occasion and look through a window to see what might have been yours.😜 Try not to get shot.

Maybe I'll take him some Georgia peaches and get invited in for a brief listen. 😂

NC peaches are better than GA ones. Hopefully I won't get run out by a mob carrying pitch forks from Atlanta for saying that.

News flash: SuperRoo was last seen hopping down Peachtree Street with an angry mob behind him.

My favorite peaches are the ones I see while walking on the beaches.
