Mentioned a short while ago that I had ordered a black Asgard 3 with an internal DAC card (for my first all-in-one Schiit component and the first one in black). I've had it for a week; and after a week's worth of nightly listening I'm impressed. I'm a big fan of Schiit's True Multibit implementations and adore both my Yggy and Bifrost 2, but since I was looking for a single inexpensive component which would be easier to carry around, I decided to buy the 4490 module for this Asgard to save $100, since it won't be my main system, simply an ancillary one.
While I wouldn't switch from Multibit for the 4490, nor choose it if it were my sole audio system, this delta-sigma implementation is excellent, particularly for the price. It's remarkable the performance and power I'm getting for $299. It really drives my Focal Elex phones exceptionally well. Last night I enjoyed Bill Evan's "Waltz for Debby" followed by Dire Strait's "Making Movies." Motian's cymbals shimmered and Knopfler's guitar sang.
Well done, Schiit. However, it's when you place this in context that it truly shines for me. My first digital system was the Asgard 2 with the original Bifrost Uber, bought in 2014. I thought at the time that it was incredible sound for $768. Six years later this all-in-one Asgard 3 sounds better for less than 40% of that price. Very well done, indeed.
