Actually, Frank Zappa was anti-drugs, and would let band members go who he caught firing up and such.  And I blew a little impromptu sit down session with him in the parking lot of Armadillo HQ one night after we'd been evacuated because of a bomb scare during his "Crux of the Biscuit" tour concert, when I produced a joint in my ignorance to commemorate the event.  He promptly got up and went back into his limo.  Damn.

I always thought that one of the contributing factors to him being so anti-drug may have been because he was frequently harassed by the FBI. Rumor was that Nixon hated him. Having drugs would have made him an easy bust. Being a brilliant guy, he likely wanted to avoid this.

I chalked it up to his being serious about his music, so that he wouldn't tolerate any doper slackardness around him in his supporting band and even environment.  Prolly fancied himself a composer, explaining his forays into classical and jazz themes.

My take on Zappa is that he operated on a different plane of consciousness from the rest of the world. Naturally, to reach that same plane, the average person would need some chemical intervention. So, one says to oneself, "if I need to smoke/ingest/inject this substance, then it stands that he (our friend Frank) is doing the same."

I got to meet Mr. Zappa and his wife Gail twice - a good friend of mine was the Fairlight and Synclavier tech working for him at Barking Pumpkin studio and I asked to tag along.  A creative genius and very nice man.  His 100th album "Dance Me This" is being released in June.  It was the last thing he was working on when he died and it was apparently finished by Dweezil.
