I returned my asgard 3. Worst sounding amp i ever used. As stated before i found it extremely harsh, edgy and bright.I enjoy my Asgard 3. I find it to be musical and inviting. It's a shame that Schiit retired it, but I'm sure they know what they are doing. Thinking about the Valhalla 3 because I feel that it would complement my Asgard 3 nicely. I'll see.

Schiit Asgard 3 - Impressions Thread

Saw your post before with these observations which I found more than a little surprising. I've been happily using the A3 for a while now and "extremely harsh, edgy & bright" are the last words I'd use to describe it. If anything I find it quite warm sounding, bordering on "dark".I returned my asgard 3. Worst sounding amp i ever used. As stated before i found it extremely harsh, edgy and bright.
Maybe you had a defective unit?

I don't own mine anymore, but I never found it harsh or bright. Just the opposite.Saw your post before with these observations which I found more than a little surprising. Yes that could be the problem. I know that im not the only one having those same observations. It could be that there were major variations between units. Also could that be the reason it was discontinued?Saw your post before with these observations which I found more than a little surprising. I'm sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with the Asgard 3. Schiit, from what I have personally experienced, does not appear to have the type of quality control issues that would cause a significant variation in the sound of a particular audio component. However, like any other audio manufacturer, from time to time a piece of their gear that's not ready for prime time, may slip through the cracks and make it into the hands of a customer. Perhaps that's what happened with your A3?
I'd be curious to know what sources you used with the A3 as well as your headphones. Ironic as it may sound, sometimes good components, for one reason or another, don't synergize well with eachother, which can manifest in less than desirable results. I've always found the A3 to be a pleasant sounding headphone amplifier that works well with a variety of different dac's as well as headphones. Best of luck with your future audio purchases and enjoy the music!

The dac chip is an ess 9038. Headphones are every 600 series model ever made. Focal elex, and Neumann ndh30. All sound great on my singxer sa1, Rebel amp, topping A90d, gashelli amp 2 watt version and a very underrated monoprice thx 887. They all sound as most reviewers have said in regards to their sound signiture. Kept the Asgard on for 2 days straight to see if the sound would soften over time. But no cigar! I've had good luck using the A3 with my HD600's and HD6XX's. Have you ever heard other headphone amplifiers from Schiit? If so did you like them? I'm trying to figure out if you don't like the sound signature of Schiit products, or if you actually did get an A3 that was not performing properly. The dac chip is an ess 9038. I really think they had issues with that amp.

It definitely sounds like the A3 you received was not operating up to spec. But at least you're enjoying music through your other amp's!If that was performing properly then they have major problems. Lol

I've enjoyed my Asgard but I'll admit I use it only to drive my planar magnetic headphones.

I like the A3 for driving my planars but IME the real bargain headphone amplifier for driving planars is the Asgard 2.I've enjoyed my Asgard but I'll admit I use it only to drive my planar magnetic headphones.
I bought a pair of them at close out a few years ago for about $300 delivered with a 5 year warranty. They are arguably the best
purchase I have made in headfi gear.
