the printscreen trick doesnt work, are there any simple means to go about doing this?

Power DVD will let you take and save a snapshot of any frame on a DVD.

Yup, there is a button that looks like a camera.

Called "Capture Frame".

Don't use Printscreen, that still doesn't work.

PowerDVD will play back even DiVX and XViD, so you can play it there to take screen grabs as well.

Media Player Classic also takes screenshots. File -> Save image. Plus, it handles just about any file format you'd want to use.
