I just accidentally washed my cherished 8gb rockboxed Clip+. Currently I have it in a bag of rice to see if drying out will help it, as some have said they had success doing so. Devastated that my little swiss army knife of a player is now gone.
So, I'm currently thinking about either getting a Fiio x1 or a replacement Clip+ on ebay. I like that the x1 does hi-res, but I don't care about any of the other features all that much. The simplicity of the clip screen/interface was fine for me.
Sound quality wise, is the X1 a big improvement over a rockboxed Clip?
The only downside I can see so far is that the X1 can't play ac3 files as I used to listen to DVD commentaries on the go with my Clip.
EDIT: Looking now, an X1 is $99 and X3 is $169 and a used Clip+ is $50-90.
