Samsung S8 / S8+ Sound Quality

Hey all. I found this thread while curious about the DACs used in the S8+. I never imagined considering a cell-phone as a good audio source, but the S8 isn't your average 'phone'. I'm an audioholic by nature. The S8+ is impressive and I want to exploit it's capabilities.
I've built several mostly high-end home audio speaker systems. When I do serious listening, it's only my main reference speakers (MTM/SUB) in my 18x25 media room, which has acoustic wall treatment. The speakers are tuned with EQ to the room and the result is very close to the artist's intention of presentation. That, which includes great imaging and flat response from sub-sonic to well beyond the upper limits, is my goal with dynamic speakers. Although headphones have perfect channel separation with wide response, are immune to environmental reflections and aren't affected by room boundaries, reflections, standing waves, etc...they have totally unrealistic imaging....Does the artist intend for the 'image' to be in the center of my head? No, but l do find it rewarding to listen to well recorded audio on great headphones with source headroom to spare as far as sampling/ bit rate goes.

I need some clarification or confirmation regarding source material and DAC regarding the S8. I do understand DAC. Basically, the digital (D) signal is converted (C) to Analog (A) so we can understand it and it can be amplified. The catch is, the end result can be no better than the source, regardless of format. We know there's lots of 'junk' out there. When I search for MP3s online, I try to find the highest bit-rate available. When I convert my digital audio to MP3, I choose the highest rates and don't care about file size.

My questions:

I understand Samsung purchased harmon/kardon and H-K technology is used in the S8, from what the salesman told me. Is this true? What I also can't seem to find an answer to is this: For those of us who are curious, can the S8 be configured for digital audio output for connection to a pre-amp/amp or headphone amp with known DAC quality and bandwidth? S/PDIF? It seems so, by reading some comments here, but how is it done on the phone? Sorry for my ignorance.

Although we download 320 bit-rate files, how can we know if the material has been up-converted or not? Can we trust the file properties/ does 320 guarantee quality? I'll settle for lower rates with older recordings, which lack the dynamics of modern digital audio. What's the best source of quality MP3s where you can choose the rates?

If the S8 does have great DAC's and the analog out put is acceptable, any decent amp, whether connected to speakers or headphone should be good enough to satisfy the 'purist', right??

Thanks.

Hows the loudness comparing to S6 on Exynos?

+1

I am also interested in anyone who may of been able to compare this. I have always found the amp in S6 to be one of it's weak points. Looking at the S8 which is a beautiful phone, but concerned that the audio output will be flat again!!!

Bit more but never going to drive demanding headphones.

My main use is with 9 Ohm Shure SE846's which are so easy to drive I only need volume around 45%. With my older 50 Ohm Klipsch X10i's I'd need around 65-70%. I also use a Fiio X5III & Mojo but for "out & about" convenience straight out of the S8 is very good to my ears, better than the S6 & S7 I'd say.

I tend to use my X5III & Mojo at home now and just use the S8 when away from home.

Aptx

From my listening I'd say it does though I don't tend to use BT audio.

I tried my KZ ZS3 yesterday on the S8, while the volume is very acceptable, it's like the HTC 10 with Boomsound OFF, so it means it definitely need a dynamic range, clarity and loudness boost.
I imagine V4A with some mods can transform the S8 to a much better audio source no? Making it very close to what the HTC 10 can procure out of the box?
What about Flac and Hi-Res, any words about the S8 being Hi-Res?

That's great information! Thank you.

My IEMs are the Q-Jays which have 50 ohm @ 1khz Impedance with 103db @ 1khz - so maybe I need some easier to drive phones????

I meant not just playing Flac but reproduce the full capacity of a Flac sound in terms of audio quality

Oh.... Well not as good as my Mojo or X5III but again good enough for a phone. If critical listening at home than I'd still use my DAC/DAP over the smartphone. Suppose it depends on how critical you are.

Well it does drive the X10i's OK too, but not as good as my Fiio X5III.

So I went in to a store in my lunch break and did some very quick 'a' to 'b' testing. Between my S6 and the LG G6, S8 and Pixel XL using my Q-Jays.

Was very brief and just using poor quality files from You Tube so YMMV!!!

My findings were the Pixel XL had the most volume but sounded a tad brash, the G6 was pretty average and the S8 was indeed as psikey described louder than the S6 and I felt it had much better reproduction than my G6 (which sounded flat when swapping back and forth) and the two others I tested.

As it stands I think the S8 is for me - it also a beautiful phone.....

Aptx is for me essential and unfortunately I cant find a final answer on whether exynos version has got it or not.....even samsung official support gave me a non satisfing reply. ....

Listening to my HM5 which is 64ohm at 95 out of 150 on the volume, so 60%. Snapdragon S8 using Tidal HiFi. It sounds perfectly acceptable for a smartphone. Nothing seems dull or missing.

Well I have the exynos version (Korean S8 Plus 128GB) and I was able to connect to my Oppo HA-1 via bluetooth and got AptX on the Oppo status screen. So I'm pretty sure it is capable of AptX.

Thank you so much!
This morning I finally received a msg from samsung europe which confirmed this: both 835 and exynos have aptx capability
Cheers
