samsung galaxy player wifi 4/5

Couldn't tell you if the 4.0 and 5.0 have different parts than the Galaxy S phone. Why?  I don't have a Galaxy S phone.

ifixit's site may eventually have breakdowns of both devices if it doesn't already.

I installed PowerAMP on my SGP 5.0 and the sq went through the ROOF!!! The volume doubled, the eq is better than on my Motorola Atrix 4G, and the bass (when I put it all the way up to test w/my hd25-1 II) shook my headphones. This player really is fantastic,...WINNER!!!

looks like someone was working on a custom rom (well atlest on 4.0) and it has voodoo too! http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66820

This is great news!  Though it seems that the kernel in the link was compiled for the french (euro?) version of the firmware, and at the moment the author advises against flashing it on US/KR models.  Still, this means that very soon we will be able to load voodoo onto these devices.  Rooting them is very simple too by the way, they are compatible with most of the 1 click methods for gingerbread.  I own the 5 by the way and find it to be great.

poweramp does wonder --  with the right eq tweak and all. :)

Just a heads up for those following the thread, XDA now has a dedicated sub forum for the galaxy player 4 and 5, so custom roms for all versions of the player can't be too far behind.  Developer interest seems to be picking up, though quite slowly compared to other android devices.  Still, I find that my galaxy player 5 gets constant use as it absolutely demolishes my ipod touch 4 out of the headphone jack (the line out is a different story however).  Can't wait for voodoo sound to be incorporated, since its all but been confirmed that the 4 and 5 indeed use the same wm8994 dac as the galaxy s series phones.

Yes evilhippie please link the information that confirms that the SGP 5.0 and 4.0 both use the Wolfson WM8994 DAC. I have not seen anything confirming this yet, I would love to see if anyone has torn a 5.0 apart or has full manufacturer specs.

Here is the last info I saw regarding the DACs in the Samsung Galaxy players: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64069 - notice the question mark next to the YP-G70 (SGP 5.0)

Whatever DAC the 5.0 has uses very little power and virtually zero CPU resources with the stock music player software. I think that their may be another audio processor chip that offloads much of the CPU load. In comparison, I see that Neutron uses 19-40%+ of the CPU resources while it is running and roughly 4-5% more power. I attribute this to the DSP processes that Neutron uses along with a tiny bit of sloppy coding. This extra use of resources may also be because Neutron, and I suspect PowerAmp, are designed to be universal full featured Android players versus something that is optimized to only one device like to stock software may be.

Right now I am A-B testing PowerAmp and Neutron. Neutron sounded good in my car today, a lot better (louder with less distortion) than the stock player software. Tomorrow PowerAmp gets a through test in the car. I plan to write a review of my experience with each APP along with my decision making process for selecting one over the other.

Poking around the file system with root explorer and running dmesg in the terminal, I was able to produce some interesting output.  I won't post it all because the majority of the output is irrelevant, but I did find a few interesting lines that may help identify the DAC used.  Here goes:

Quote:
<6>[    2.736609] ALSA device list:
<6>[    2.739505]   #0: smdkc110 (mc1n2)

<6>[   10.035452] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_i2s_set_fmt,770) ] fmt= 0
<6>[   10.039070] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_set_fmt_common,694) ] fmt=0
<6>[   10.044388] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_i2s_set_clkdiv,739) ] div_id= 5, div=3
<6>[   10.050583] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_i2s_hw_params,806) ] hw_params: [0] name=subdevice #0, dir=0, rate=44100, bits=2, ch=2
<6>[   10.050594]
<6>[   10.080772] [ mc1n2 (LoadPRDFile,325) ] prd=XAA
<6>[   10.080779]
<6>[   10.085525] [ mc1n2 (LoadPRDFile,336) ] current spl level =2
<6>[   10.085533]
<4>[   10.093097] load spl 107DB
<6>[   10.095268] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_set_playback_path,2074) ] path_num 2
<6>[   10.101822] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_set_playback_path,2145) ] analog volume=53
<6>[   10.165894] [ mc1n2 (mc1n2_hw_free,933) ] stream=(0) S5p_rp_is_running(0)

Most interesting to me are the lines that read "load spl 107DB" and "analog volume=53".  Not quite a confirmation of what particular chip is used, but some information that might help solve the mystery.

looking further into the the galaxy SII/Note sound hardware I noticed that the Yamaha C1YMU823 is also referred to as MC-1N2, which would mean that the DAC chip is in fact made by Yamaha.

Speaking of this, it seems Supercurio just released Voodoo Louder for the SGSII and Galaxy Note, though it seems to just boost output volume without the full features of voodoo control for wolfson devices.  Heres the market link to the app:

https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.louder

Its not quite voodoo control but I'm still gonna give it a try.

Edit: It seems Voodoo Louder does not support the YP-G70 at this time, but may gain support eventually.  Oh well, guess we will have to be patient.

I hope the compatibility issue is worked out for my SGP 5.0. I want that Voodoo Louder to try out ASAP.

Just got one, supports power amp but doesn't have support for voodoo yet.  the custom rom community is working on support for it.  I expect cyanogen mod to have support for it by May.
