Sample Rate in Windows with Optical Out to DAC? 16/48 or 24/192 with a DAC that upsamples to 24/422?

Unfortunately Win doesn't support automatic sample rate switching.
Set is to  the sample rate most common in your collection.

I wonder if 24/192 is working reliable over Toslink.
The standard says 24/96 max but modern hardware often performs much better.

An alternative is using a media player supporting WASAPI like MusicBee or Foobar.
WASAPI bypasses the Win mixer hence all audio can be played at its native sample rate and bit depth.

Does changing sample rate in windows automatically upsample anything you listen to (ex: 41 khz youtube) from it's original to what is selected in windows?

yes, mostly. The bit depth is always converted to 32 bit and the also downsampled to 16 bit or 24 bit depending on what you select. The exception is if you use wasapi exclusive mode; it can play the format that the application outputs.

In that case, would it be better to keep the sample at 41 prior to sending the file to the dac to be upsampled to 322 khz? AKA which is better:

44.1 khz music -> 192 music windows upsample -> 322 dac upsample

OR

44.1 khz music -> no windows upsample (keep windows setting at 41) -> 322 dac upsample

Also, what sample rate would something like Netflix or Youtube use?

Is that just bit depth? Or sample rate too?
