I just went out today and bought a sony scd-cd775 and bought the Alice and Chains SACD. So I go on the net and check out some more titles and I'm finding a LOT more DVD-A titles. I originally went with SACD because I've been reading on these forums that SACD has alot more support and seems to be winning the 'format war'. Am I just missing something or is DVD-A killing SACD as far as quality releases. All I see on SACD is miles davis and a couple classical's..big wow...I don't even listen to classical...

Rolling Stones? They're okay..I don't really listen to them...

I mean jeez so far on DVA-A I've seen eric clapton, fleetwood mac, the police, sting, stone temple pilots , eagles, and TONS more that I would buy in a heartbeat.

What do we get w/ SACD?? Rolling stones and JLO ...WOOHOO!!

DVD-Audio has fewer titles available, but far more recent rock releases than SACD. DVD-A was targeted at regular folks, SACD at audiophiles, hence the wider selection of jazz and classical on SACD.

It's very conrtroversial as to whether SACD or DVD-A is superior. They fight to the death over this issue over at audioasylum. Suffice to say, they are both vastly superior to CD and that's the crucial factor.

The major "problem" with DVD-A is the looseness of the standard. It doesn't require that DVD-Aidio releases be in full 24 bit 192Khz, the max resolution DVD-Audio can provide. For example I have the Bjork DVD-Audio and it's only 24-bit 48Khz, still an improvement over CD, but not nearly up to the full potential it could be.

Well, Sony and Columbia records have some rock artists that I would love to hear on SACD, but I don't understand why they haven't released them yet. One of the problems is that even though most of the DVD-A's are more rock oriented, you really need to look at the labels that you are buying and go with the format that they're supporting because I don't see Virgin releasing any SACD's or Universal releasing DVD-A's.

Mark my words - SACD and DVD-A will die. There is just not enough software to support them. Who cares if you can get an SACD player for under $200 now if there is nothing to play on it.

Since classical music is one of my main enjoyments, there is already plenty SACD material out there to satisfy my needs. As for Redbook, my Marantz SA8260 provides superb performance. So, as far as I'm concerned, I'm not concerned whether SACD becomes mainstream. There is, and will be, lots for me to enjoy, and I think that there are lots of others like me.
