Those two cans are on the exact opposite sides of the audio world.
It's like asking "Should I get a porsche or a rolls royce?" .. noone will be able to tell you
If you want a good advise, you will need to put more effort to explain your preference and current needs. I only heard it briefly but K1000 was really good at producing piano sound. On the other hand, Grado was pretty descent too. I'm not sure if you are trying to listen to vocal oriented piano or classical/newage piano music, but Grado has a tighter bass (hard hitting) and K1000 has a fuller sounding bass (using the tube amp). Frankly if you are considering these two expensive phones (you do know they both cost around $695, however I did see RS-1 selling at lower $625.50 at Audio Advisor), you should provide more information so that forum members can provide you with more usable advise.
I have both, as well as an HD650, and I listen to all three almost every day. Athough the K1000 is superior to the RS-1 and HD650 for the kinds of music that I listen to, I still really enjoy listening to the others. As for a comparison of the RS-1 to the HD650, I prefer the RS-1. BTW, IMO the improvement of SACD's over Redbook is substantially greater than the improvement of the K1000 over the RS-1. Thus, if I had only limited resources, I suggest putting your money into SACDs, and sticking with only one really good headphone; e.g., an RS-1. One more thought -- I think that the RS-1 is more "practical" than the K1000. It can be used with lots of less expensive ss amps, which also produce a lot less heat than tube amps. It'll certainly sound fine with an RA-1. The RS-1 will also sound really good when just plugged directly into the headphone outlet of some good CDPs (e.g., my Marantz SA8260 SACD player). So, on balance, I'd place the RS-1 as first choice, i.e., ahead of the K1000 and the HD650. Oops, I think that this will bring on some flames.
Which is better to buy ? which is better to listen to the music ?
i wouldn't buy the k1000 if it's your first set of headphones. it sounds cool, but it's totally different from any other headphone out there, both in design and sound. i'd buy something "normal" first, then you can experiment with the k1000 when you have some extra cash.
personally, i think the k1000 accels at instrumental type stuff and vocals. it's really a unique sound. very detailed. but it's cumbersome, and not as convenient as normal phones. so, for those reasons alone, i almost never use my k1000's.

Why not go for cd3k woody for the same kind of money then?

definetly. nothing short then amazing, if you can accept some color. although in complex tasks, i find the RS-1 a bit lacking in the instrument seperation department.
i listen to all sorts of music with the RS-1.

It's wonderful for listening to classical SACDs. Not quite as good as the K1000, but not too far from it. IMO, the RS1 is better than the HD650 for classical.
