same impression here when i first received M3 from thrice (mr.rockhopper). He recommended, and rightly so, 100 hour play time before everything (amp, and maybe ears) settles in. I'm now pretty satisfied with the purchase.
I just received my M3 Home yesterday, but won't get a chance to listen until Saturday when I can get my rig set up. Just remodeled our bedroom, so listening should be even more enjoyable now.
Dick Danger,
I have pimeta and enjoy it quite a lot too. I think it's a very good amp. I like it enough that i have both M3 and pimeta run simultaneously side by side all the time. Depending on the mood, i switch from one to the other... although i prefer M3 on general basis, my pimeta is different enough (thinner and brighter to my ears) to give me different flavor that often improve musical enjoyment. give it sometimes and if you aren't happy, maybe stephen will be able to tweek it to you liking : )
I missed my original PIMETA so much that I built another one
. Give yourself time to adjust to the amp (as well as for the amp to burn in) and then be analytical about it's performance. Also, you've got a wide variety of opamps that will work so don't forget about that. While they wont transform the amp into something it wasn't before they can tweak the sound more to your liking.
Most of all, don't let anyone tell you that the PIMETA isn't a capable amp, it's just fallen out of favor a bit as newer DIY designs and other commercial amps have come out.
