I just purchased a 30GB video ipod.

If I install rockbox, it probably voids the ipod warranty right?

Which would you choose?
Warranty and battery life? or Better SQ?

I believe Apple has mentioned that they will honor hardware warranty even in the use of alternative firmwares.

Very good move on their part, if so.

No warranty problems because you can always "restore" your Ipod. This completely removes any remnants of Rockbox.

As a side note, if you just bought your Ipod, chances are its a 5.5G, which aren't supported by RB.

thanks for informing me btw.

Is there any way to determine whether or not you are using 5.5g or 5g?

IIRC the 5.5G comes in a smaller box without an iTunes CD, has a brighter screen, and has a "search" feature that allows you to input characters to search your collection.

well I'm sure there will be rockbox for the 5.5G's eventually.

People on the forums are already testing it out. Rockbox is based off linux IIRC, they just have to iron out the bugs. I think you can get it working if you do some hacking yourself and built it via source, they just don't have packaged installer yet.

Rockbox is not linux based.

Some people have gotten Rockbox running on the 30GB 5.5g, as described in this thread: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=6475.0

Rockbox is not yet running, either officially or unofficially, on a the 80GB model.

naw.. I won't refund it.

I'll just not use it until the rockbox community comes up with a solution.

Does anybody know how much rockbox decreases video ipod battery life?

It depends on how your using Rockbox on the ipod. But rockbox will decrease some battery life but it isn't so bad.

For me if you do not use the tagcache and have the hard drive spin up constantly to scroll through your folders/file then it will definitely make your battery life pour into the drain. But if you use the tagcache then the hard drive won't spin up that much so then you will have better battery life.
