I always wondered if it makes any sense to use high bitrates for older recordings from, say the 30s/40s, which obviously are pretty poor quality.  What bitrates would you use for those CDs if you wanted to save on file size? 
 
Taking this one step further when would you say high quality recordings became available to the public....imho recordings from the 60s are still pretty poor, so I'd say 1970s.

The most difficult song I ever ripped was a late 40s Decca Sammy Davis Jr track. It had a string tone that artifacted all the way up to 192. Old 78s with crackles are hard to encode too. I find that I can't cut the bitrate, except to encode in true mono which cuts the bitrate in half. Older music sounds better in true mono anyway.
