This is not a good choice if you are going to be downloading songs from sites that put copy protection on the songs since it won't play them. There are a few reviews of this unit on the web. problem being that you lose the removable battery, radio, voice recorder, and the better sound quallity

the micro has great interface after getting oriented with it (takes like 3 min) has 8-11 hours of battery life (depending on sound quality and volume) has drag and drop with the new firmware update which takes like 2 min to update, and has some of the best sound coming out of any portable player. but if you want a straight up massive capasity player with a tiny form and dont care about anything else go with the archos.

But ofcourse, it's a great advantage, because batteries do loose life...

Maybe the Carbon is as big as your remote and if it's not, it's the easiest of both to use blindely.

no no, you wouldn't be buying these batteries from creative. you think the $5 battery i bought for my motorola was made by motorola? hell, do you think the ones Motorola is selling are made by motorola? these batteries cost nothing to make, and take out the middle man, you can get them for almost nothing. All we need now is the device to be popular enough for some sweatshop in indonesia to start popping them out. creative will have nothing to do with it, and probably wont like it. but i will.

and about the size...i dont know why people keep saying the carbon is smaller, because it isnt.
micro: 3.3in x 2.0 x 0.7 volume: 4.62in^3
carbon: 3.3in x 2.5 x 0.6 volume: 4.95in^3
(though both are curved, so those are a little off)
but you're right, the carbon probably is easier to use without looking. i don't particularly like the touch sensitive pad (would prefer buttons), but hopefully the remote will remedy that

yes, the battery has to be charged in the player... i think you are missing the point.
Situation: I am on a boat in the middle of the atlantic. All of a sudden, we strike an iceberg, and the boat starts going down. I grab the three things necessary in life, food, water, and my mp3 player, and join my carbon-owning friend in the only life-raft. As we watch the boat sink, we each listen to counting crows to calm down and mourn the loss of our friends and family.
Next thing we know, it's the next morning...but, oh no, our mp3 players have been on the whole time! No way to recharge? Why didn't they put an outlet in the liferaft?? What are we to do in the middle of the ocean with no music? No worries for me, though, I just pop in the next battery, and I'm having a great time singing along to george clinton and OAR all day.
Unfortunately, my carbon-owning friend has nothing to do but stare out across the endless sea, thinking about his family and how bored he is. Eventually, the repetitive sound of the crashing waves against the boat drives him crazy, and he cracks. He says he can't take it anymore, and throws himself overboard to the sharks. Meanwhile, I'm about halfway through Crazy game of Poker and I couldn't be happier.
A short time later, another boat comes along and takes me home, finally giving me an opportunity to recharge all my extra batteries and tell my friends about my fun adventure.

So who do want to be? The happy micro owner, or shark food?

Or, I guess another option is if i just forget to charge it one night. Either one.

If you've seen a carbon, that figure is actually quite off. The 0.6" is at the thickest point, it's probably between 1/2 to 2/3rds that for most of it. The carbon is significantly smaller, both volumetrically, and for all practical purposes.

As much as I like the Carbon my biggest fear about purchasing it is Rio's customer support. I've read too many horror stories about players dieing often and Rio doing nothing to help. Makes me worry a bit.

Cyclone. I agree with most of what you said except sound quality. I have a Zen and the sound quality of the Archos is just as good. The other stuff you mention is bells and whistles for me, but important to others I guess. Old Dave

Just another question. The battery has to be charged IN the player right? How do you get two full batteries then? Li-on batteries tend to lose power very fast when idle, so charging on the forehand isn't really a posibility, right?

yes, the battery does have to be charged in the player. the charge does fall off with time; however, as long as you use it in a reasonable time after charging, you should be able to use more than one battery to sufficiently extend the player's playtime.

Edited: because i'm an ass. sorry about that.

you can operate the micro with one hand...

Anyways, i like my micro, and I'm also an ipod owner, so I'll give you some insight.

Although I don't know much about the carbon, I've tried it out, and its a bit weird. The interface is not as easy to learn as the micro.

The micro has far more features and is advocates well for itself.

The carbon has more battery life but thats basically it.

Do you think it discharges in 5 minutes when it isnt being used? It would take months for a fully charged battery to drain. It is certainly possible to have multiple charged batteries, and i do with my cell phone.

people are so funny...whatever they buy is the best thing in the world, and everything else is crap...lol

I never said that... I was just confused, it would be better to me if there was somekind of AC-adapter to charge them in. Your flame is not really necessary imo.

I do like the Zen, with it's extra features as on-the-go playlists, FM-tuner etc. I actually recommended one to my best friend, I just had other things that were more important to me, such as more out-put and a better battery-life. Together with the almost perfect design, this is the ideal player so far.

1) Carbon
2) Happy Birthday

I think that I'm going to go with the Micro. I'm more a pick it up and go type of guy so all the extra bells and whistles on the micro wouldn't prove to be much of an added incentive. Thanks for all of the input everyone!

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a native-speaker, but aren't you contradicting yourself? Saying you buy a Micro, because all the bells and whistles are no use to you?

ya i know he did but the micro is easier and faster to use with a more intuative UI. click buttons are nice but i can scroll through a list of 600 songs and find one that i want pretty damn quick
eggosmile.gif
. besides that you also get the extra feautres and sound quality. not to say the carbon isnt good, its just that the micro is easier, faster, of higher quality, and better looking (depending on color, get silver!). to tell the truth it doesnt matter that much if you get one or the other, just as long as you dont get an ipod mini
