I listen to Strauss Waltzes, Polkas, Marches more than any other cds I have by him. They always lighten my mood

I have the Kempe Cycle and I second that: exemplary recordings of a reasonably complete instrumental cannon by R Strauss. The sound is very satisfactory (these were recorded in the 70s).

Other personal favs: Also Sprach Zarathustra by Eugene Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra. Although it may not have the "slam" of other conductors, the texture and colour is just magnificant. Although there must be more interesting renditions of Ein Heldenleben out there, I'm happy to live with either Kempe's or Haitink's.

Brahms loved that Strauss too.
