Hi Guys,

I'm the market for a DAP.  Do you guys think this can be portable enough to take on a run?  Im ok if it's a bit on the heavy side but do you guys know if there's like an arm strap for this one?

The other DAP I initially saw was the Hifiman HM700.  How would you compare the AP100 to the HM700?

Ap100 is bigger and heavier than HM700 (156g vs 82g). There is no arm strap for Ap100 as far as I know. I think HM700 with RE400B would be better choice for your needs.

I'm quite ok with it being heavier and bigger. I've even taken my Z Ultra phone on the run along with lots of coins/keys in the pocket :p

In case of SQ, I assume AP100 > HM700/RE400B ?

I'm just having second thoughts on the HM700 combo as I'll also use the IEMs in my PC and phones and I don't like the added adapter to use the RE400B nor using the HM700 with my headphone with the added adapter again. I don't like extras like those so was thinking of AP100 as I have seen good reviews here.

If I go to the AP100 route, i'll also need to buy an IEM.  any suggestions for $100-150 range?  I mostly listen to acoustic/unplugged songs.

Definitely Havi B3 pro1 or to a lesser extend IM50/70. But hey Havi B6 is about to be released next month.

When it comes to sounds quality, AP100 > X5/X1/HM700 (I have all 4 ).  HM700 is the most portable and comes with an armband and sounds great with RE400B, but you are limited to balanced wired TRRS output and balanced wired RE400B.  Included adapter for HM700 to use with regular headphones is flimsy and PITA; the same with using adapter for RE400B though it could be connected directly to any DAP.  The biggest problem with HM700 is hidden button controls which are not very intuitive.  You only have 3 physical buttons for volume up/down and power.  Wish someone would Rockbox it to add functionality of play/pause and track skip to those three buttons.  So, it's more useful when you hit play and keep it in armband, but limited to high quality sound only when used with balanced wired headphones such as RE400B or RE600.  X1 is portable and will have a neat armband case, plus it costs only $100 and has a nice wheel control and LO output, but its sound quality is nowhere near AP100.  X5 comes close but it's $150 more than AP100 (considering $194 deal).  AP100 sound quality is top notch, though navigation is not as sleek as scrolling wheel of X5/X1.  Also, AP100 has a very powerful amp that can drive anything.  You can get any $3 armband designed for iPhone 4 and use it with AP100.

Unfortunately, I just checked Amazon US and AP100 is back to $299 :frowning2:  Perhaps, contact Hidizs and find out when they are going to have this $194 deal again, or maybe you can buy it directly from them at this price.

Awesome!  Did you get IM70 as well?  How do you like AP100 sound out of the box?  Make sure to use SRC to up-sample to 24b/192k - that's where the magic happens

Wow, thanks for the detailed response.. It's ok.  I will not buy in Amazon. Just in taobao and just right now I saw, they have a deal of AP100 + GR07 Classic for about $300 or so.. Just reading the reviews and making sure the seller is a trusted one.

Nope, unfortunately IM70 is still waiting at the customs. I will get them by next week hopefully. Yep, I tried that SRC button to upsample to 24/192k and liked it a lot. It is like adding an amp as you said.

Out of the box, it sounds  quite good but the bass seems to be a bit loose not tight as I would like. I quite like the mids. The mids really shines and treble is a little bit laid back but extension is good. How many hours do I need to burn in this btw?

Please note that these are only "out of the box" impressions. Need to burn this beauty in.

I just did the update to 068. I think I notice a difference with the GEN EQ too. Of course you may have influenced me psychoacoustically, ha ha.

Can you please share the fw link? The old one does't seem to work.

Absoutely gutted. Missed on the $194 deal because I had an exam paper in the afternoon, and by the time I got home, it was back to $299.

I've emailed Hidizs asking if there's any way to nab it for $195 through other means. Will report back here with info, hopefully positive one, for the benefit of anyone thinking of jumping on the Hidizs ship as well.

Alternatively, any of you buggers who bought it for the BF $195 price and decide to let it go, drop me a PM if you decide its not your cup of tea... I'll be willing to pick it up very close to what you paid for.

Cheers!
