Sad news for all fans of the avant-garde and outsider art: Don Van Vliet died this morning from the complications of multiple sclerosis.
Some news links:
Don Van Vliet, Known To Rock Fans As Captain Beefheart, Dies
Captain Beefheart dies aged 69
And some reading to remember him at his prime:
The Odyssey of Captain Beefheart (Rolling Stone, May 14, 1970)
As for me, I'm going to play Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) in his honor. It wasn't his weirdest or most challenging album. Instead, it sounded like a restless soul who'd found some measure of peace with himself. And that's how I want to think of him now.
