I'm off to Afghanistan in a few months - dragging a laptop, dac, psu, valve amp and full size cans around would be impossible.

I love the sound I'm getting with Foobar: big fan of the wasapi output and the dolby headphone wrapper.

I have a Cowon D2+, and have yet to decide on earphones. Am I expecting too much from a portable setup, or is it time to raid the piggy bank?

Cheers in advance for any tips.

I think if you get the Ibasso DX100, you could take the equivalent of desktop sound with you in a portable set up. Since you have a few months' time, you should have enough time to read the three DX100 threads :o:D

Ipod (lossless) + HRT iStreamer + Yamaha MSP5 Studio (2x)

For under $1,000 you have a audio quality and capacity that no other setup can match.

That's what I'd take to Kabul, were I to go back again...

Depends what sort of desktop rig quality your looking at, and how much your willing to spend... something better than the D2000 + amp can be achieved, however hd600 may be harder
