I have a lot of music now in ALAC format (not all, but about 80%), ready to put into iTunes where I already have that same existing music at 256k AAC.
 
Are there any good tools that will do the same as essentially importing all my "new" music, while overwriting the duplicate songs at low bitrates in iTunes, effectively keeping playlists etc if possible?

I used two tools...Max out there on the net to convert and SongDeDuper on the App Store to remove dupes in favor of higher bitrate versions. Pretty painless.
