I had a pair of Sennheiser HD 428's that recently went bad on me after about 5 years of owning them. I'm looking to get another pair of headphones that are a step or 2 up from the 428. My budget is about 150$. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  What about HD598?

+1 if your looking for an open back.

If your looking for another closed back, I found my Takstar Pro 80 to be an upgrade to my HD439 in every way.

Though the HD598 gets my main recommendation, just keep in mind that sound leaks and they do not provide isolation from noise around you.

Im a bassist and most of what i listen to and play is alterantive/hard/classic rock or metal. That being said I do listen to wide range of other genres. And from what I've read the 598's are amazing across the board. And although Im a bassist, Im looking more for bass clarity as opposed to bass presence/volume. Would the 598s still be my best option? I only ask because some poeple have mentioned the bass isnt the best you can get but its still pretty damn good. My 428's had great bass response, but I don't want to make any assumptions just because its the same brand.

Definitely go with the Sennheiser 598 HD, I like the way the ivory looks on them too. For around a $140 value you can't beat them, great sound, good bass, not perfect, or spectacular, but definitely above average I would say. If you don't go with the Senn 598 you could go with the audio technica ath-m50, but that's up to you bud!

Thanks guys! I guess the only question I have left is would I need an amplifier to use these with my phone or laptop?

No.
