I was gifted a Advent E142903/8B88 8" powered Subwoofer. It was made in the 1996 so the foam has rotted away from the driver. Other than that it is in good condition and I've tested the
plate amp with another sub and it works just fine although the potentiometers give a bit of noise when turning. Volmeter says the stock driver is about 3.3ohms so I was looking at a few 4ohm drivers to replace it.
So I have 2 options. Buy a $52 Dayton DCS205-4 8" or $16 GRS 8SW-4 8" driver. Both 4ohm. I'm sure either would work fine with the advent plate amp.

Is this worth it?

Or should I just go with something like a Dayton Sub-800?

Also, there is no gain/volume knob on the amp plate. How do I adjust volume?

Just replacing the driver might not solve your problem. You may need to find out the specs of the old advent driver, and look for one that is at least similar and should work in the box. Drivers are some times designed to work in different conditions.... ported, sealed, infinite baffle, large box, small box etc. If you do find a match, and it is affordable, by all means replace it.
