Hi all, I'll be traveling to Singapore at the end of June and my understanding is they use UK plugs.

I want to bring a small amp/dac and I'll have my laptop, an Asus ROG. Plus cell phone, dap, etc.

Do I need a travel adapter that also functions as a voltage converter/step down transformer if I have 110v US devices?

In any case, any recommendations? Everything I come across on Amazon, people talk about them failing or frying plugged in appliances.

Thanks

People typically forget about the limits that their travel converters have and that models with higher limits cost much more. As long as your laptop and other stuff is under 230 watts, this this one will work fine:

https://www.amazon.com/Key-Power-200-Watt-Converter-International/dp/B01MSBC5LM/

If you have devices that use more than 230 watts, then get these with 2000 watt limits or 3000 watt limits, respectively:

https://www.amazon.com/Transformer-Voltage-Converter-Chocolate-Appliances/dp/B09YRHBY3K/

https://www.amazon.com/Converters-Transformer-Protection-Functions-Appliance/dp/B09V9QQ7KC/

Also, you can use this surge protector for more outlets, but only on the 2000-3000 watt models only, as you will forget what to plug in with the 230 watt model:

https://www.amazon.com/Surge-Protector-Power-Strip-Extension/dp/B092J8LPWR/

Thank you, my laptop has a 240w brick... should I play it safe and opt for the higher ones in your opinion? I can't imagine it would draw that much unless I was rendering a video, which is unlikely.

You really should just opt for the 2000 or 3000 watt model and get that surge protector with one of them as well. If you can have your boss cover for the items as a work expense and do a tax-write-off on it, then even better. Performance laptops are just going to use more power as they get faster, so future proofing for that inevitably would be wise.

Thanks @pbui44 I ordered the one you noted. I went for an 800w because there was an open box available and I have to cover out of pocket. $80 after tax.

*800w with a screen readout. We love the screen readouts.

That is fine. So you can just keep that one strictly for your laptop and use the 230w step-down transformer for your smaller devices as well. The beauty of having that much power covered is that you can add portable screens and other add-ons with extra power to spare.

Laptop adapters are universal. Amp and DAC on other hand would need step up/down transformer.

I’m not sure if you are taking Morpheus but switching voltage is pretty simple. Some earlier models have switch and later one have jumper cable which we need to move from one slot to another.

Oh no, I'm not taking anything that big. I'm looking to pick up something smaller between now and then. TBD

Stupid question but the airline is Singapore Air... does that mean UK plugs on the plane, too?

Now you're getting fancy, but I like the way you think. Case is only 1 pound plus the transformer is 9, strip is 1.

11 lbs subtracted from 50 for the checked bag.

Yeah, power strip will be fine in your bag, but there are just too many parts in that transformer.

Stupid question but the airline is Singapore Air... does that mean UK plugs on the plane, too?

Hopefully, this answers your question and more:
