So here I was, always thinking that the DT990 was in fact the "flagship" of the hifi Beyerdynamic cans, as it's the most expensive one, or so I thought.

I was looking around and found the following:

Meier-audio:

DT880 €225,- / $270,-

DT990 €250,- / $300 outside European Community
€285,- / $340 inside European Community

TTVJ:

DT880 $349.00

DT990 $229.00

How come there's that much of a difference here?

You really should judge more by the sound quality of the headphone, and the sound you are going for, than by what is the so called flagship model. In Beyers case that designation has changed in what they consider the top model, the change making a term like "fladship" nearly meaningless.

Thanks for your reply augustwest, it's not that I want to get myself one of those cans, it's just that I'm quite curious as to why there's such a difference in pricings with the TTVJ store and the meier-audio one. Also I used the term "flagship" just to define the most expensive model, which might've been wrong.

Yeah, however, you're comparing the 2006 models to the 2005 models.

Supposedly the 2006 dt990 sounds much more like the 2005 880 with more bass. Thus making the 990 the new flagship for 2006 and thus more expensive.

The 880 used to be the flagship model.

Ah, that was the information I was looking for. Thanks a lot.

Now the world makes sense again.

There was another post recently noting that Headroom had suddenly bumped up the price of the DT880 by nearly a hundred as well. I wonder what's going on? Did Beyer's US distributor finally figure out that the DT880 was worth more than $250?

This it at best HIGHLY controversial. I don't know anyone, who would position the DT990 above the DT880.

Well I said "supposedly". I've never heard the new 990's so I really can't say. All I know is that I've heard a few reports of the new 990's sounding a lot like the old 880's. (or at least not like the old 990's which were un-natural and lacked mid-range).

And, beyer claims them as their new flag-ship. Which isn't to say they're "definitely" the best.

For a while the 990 was pitched as the flagship can... I saw that written all over the place on these boards. It was the first to recieve the redesign.

Looks like someone came to their senses and priced the 880 accordingly though.
