Would a refurbished pair of LP2s be acceptable?  Or does the quality and durability of the headphones go down significantly?  If it helps I would be getting them from Amazon.  Thanks!

If refurbished by the manufacturer and especially if they come with at least a 30 to 90 day warranty, they should be fine.
 
If done by anyone else, it's a crap shoot and you bear the risk.  Of course if Amazon will take them back after a reasonable amount of time, that provides you with some insurance.

thanks for your input! I decided to go with the on ear upgrade of these: the v-moda crossfade m80s. Ill be buying them new for $150 and if anyone cares ill post a non-audiophile review of these sometime after Christmas!
