I wonder if any of you have a music guide / book / reference book for popular and rock music at home. Sometimes I want to read about people I heard on the radio yesterday, such as Jose Feliciano or John Denver, (I'm new to soft rock, and what a huge genre it is) without going to the now horrible allmusic.com for the slowest browsing experience ever.

I'm looking for the book that has enough material that I can learn about artists without going to allmusic.com all the time. It needs to have:

- Cross references to other artists;
- Recommendations;
- Biographies;
- Discographies & reviews.

I only know of "The Rough Guide", "Penguin Guide" and "The All Music Guide", and only the Rough Guide and All Music Guide do Pop and Rock.

Can you post your experiences with such books, as well as recommendations for new ones? Thanks!

One book you might start with is:

The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll
(Revised and Updated for the 21st Century)
by Holly George-Warren, Patricia Romanowski, Jon Pareles

Another worth looking at:

The Book of Rock

by Philip Dodd

These two books should get you started down the path of Rock and Roll knowledge.
