Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Aug 23, 2021 at 9:33 AM Post #586 of 2,033
Hesuvi stops producing surround everytime theres a windows update or a geforce update. I end up having to delete all drivers and software and install everything from scratch (vbcable, equalizer apo, hesuvi etc) how do you guys keep the settings to stick for good?
I've had no problems with Windows 10 updates and been using HeSuVi with an Impulcifer HRIR for nearly 2 years. Don't have geforce so can't comment about that. Sorry can't be more helpful.

Is it Possible after the measurements are taken to increase the volume in say the rear channels? My measurement sound better than Atmos and much clearer. But Atmos rear channels are better where as my measurement sound better in everything else. Watching first flight where there's a fly in the rocket with them, using Atmos it sounds like it behind me buzzing around where as in my measurement its not so distinct. also when people are talking at the funeral the sound is more around me rather than mostly in front.

I hope someone can look at these measurements and check if I done everything right. Or if there is something I have overlooked.

You could increase the volume in HESUVI for side and rear channels.
I’ve tried that but it’s not as good with rear pinpointed sounds. Like it’s there but not accurate just messy over there somewhere.

This is my layout and how I take measurements almost to scale 😂
Wardrobe behind me, circle is me, square is speaker

Does the echo from the cupboard behind me make a big difference to my measurements when recording? Should I hang a thick duvet to dampen the sound. I think the echo or bounce of being so close is messing up my rear recordings

Still getting more rear detail from the other hesuvi hrir’s and on my measurements I’m getting more details from the front speakers.

Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong. Is it the headroom difference causing this?

Also is it ok whilst taking each measurement to keep changing the volume and gain on to get the lowest headroom?

is having equaliser apo, vb cable and hesuvi already installed causing problems when taking measurements. Or are they not in play when the sweeps are played. Should I remove these before taking measurements?

You shouldn't change the volume between different channel measurements or the channels will end up with different volumes and you definitely don't want that.

Are you measuring with one, two or more physical speakers?

One speaker, I can use two if that makes it better

my best measurements I have done so far is without changing the volume but keeping it so each headroom is the lowest. But they vary between 5 and 1 headroom

could it be the placement of the speaker that can cause issues. Because at the moment I’m turning my head and kind of guessing the poisitions to be looking at.

It's really hard to say without knowing more. Maybe it's simply an issue of bad speaker / room / placement and the reason why front channels sound better than HeSuVi HRIRs is that front doesn't work well without personalization
so even sub-optimal setup is better with personalization than off the shelf HRIR.

I think that the headroom is just the peak volume (please correct me if I'm wrong). So even if just a single frequency have more power due to reflections of the walls it can cause a different headroom for your measurements although you move your ears only a few centimeters.

Impulcifer uses the default sound device. You should be sure not to use HESUVI/EQ-APO for the sweeps as this would also process the sweeps. If you have installed EQ-APO only for vb cable you can just switch in Windows to your soundcard/Interafce as default device for the measurements.

I will try uninstalling all the equliaserApo vbcable and hesuvi to be safe and take measurements.

can you recommend a good speaker that will work with behringer for measurements.

You don't need to uninstall, just disable HeSuVi (and if you have other filters in EqualizerAPO configs). Any good speaker is good for recording binaural room impulse responses. For example Genelec 8351B is a very good speaker.

Any suggestions on speakers. I have a couple but the behringer isn’t able to power them enough to get a suitable volume.

Maybe @morgin is still thinking about using a passive speaker on the Behringer UMC202HD headphone output, but that seems a bad idea to me.
An active speaker like the Genelec is good of course (on the line output of the UMC202HD).
Or buy an amp for the speakers that you have, like I suggested before.
[Edit: hi hi, looked at the price of the Genelec, maybe that is a bit more than what @morgin had in mind spending, why not just buy a used stereo amp for 10 or 20 Britisch Pounds.]

Yes the price is wayyyyyy above what I can spend. Just trying to get those small rear details that I’m getting from all the other hesuvi hrir’s.

right now I’m plugging in behringer into the USB port. And my speakers into the line out on the back of my pc. Changing to behringer in windows sound options when doing the headphone measurement and then changing the windows sound options to speaker line out for speaker measurements.

the single speaker measurements and two speaker measurements sound very similar. So I don’t think the problem is there.

the other hesuvi hrir (atmos, dtsX) give me distinct voices and conversations in a scene with a crowded room. I can hear each voice and what is being said and where they are behind me.
With my measurements I’m hearing them slightly but they are all kind of merged. Maybe it’s just me trying to get it too perfect

Now you have me confused. Are you using active (pc?) speakers or do you mean you plugged them in the pc's headphones/speakers output rather than line output?
