I finally got my turntable up and running. I've got a question on the clamp--it's a VPI Scout, and I bought one of those carbon record mats to put on top of the platter. With the mat, is it still necessary to put the rubber ring on the underside of the record when you use the clamp?

From my experience with Sota's similar record clamp, the answer is absolutely yes. This is especially true if the mat you have is compliant. The reason is the center label is thinner than the outside edge of the vinyl and to get good contact with the mat or platter, you need to have the ring to support the center label or you will actually raise the outside edge of the record off the mat when you apply pressure to the center.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I tried it with and without last night... it definitely needs to be on.
