Aren't the PX100s are cheap & easy way into the Sennheiser sound?

For what it's worth, the Go-Vibe ($69) with AD8620 opamp ($15) pairs vere well with HD580s in my opinion. It's not the last word on bass control, but has a very neutral/natural sound due to its simplicity of design that does let HD580 sing. Hard to find anything else that inexpensive that serves as a good entry level amp for Senns.

the px100 stock is not really the senn sound imho.
while we are on the topic is it true that the hd600 is more forgiving of poor equipment than the hd650? ie, the hd600 will sound better than the hd650 plugged directly into the headout of a pcdp?

in that case, you can pick up b-stock hd600's for close to $200usd!
and $250usd asking(may match $200 price anyways) from reputable sources!
hd6xx is the senn sound. and for about $50 more than some middle of the road senns you could go almost all the way and be done!

azure, the most sensible and cost-effective approach is to find a showroom and demo a pair of sennheisers. where do you live exactly?

I find the PX 100 clearly have the Sennheiser house sound. In fact, I was really surprised, how laid back they were, in comparison to AKG 26p etc.

I live in central California:

2 hours from San Francisco and 5 hours from LA.

So, HD580 then? It'd be $146.77 total from that OnSale place, which is the ideal amount I'd like to pay. Of course, that'd be with no amp, but that shouldn't matter, right (I'm doubtful that I won't be told that to use an amp if I say I don't like the HD580s unamped)? Or, I could get them for $199 from TTVJ/HeadRoom and take advantage of their refund program.
