I Like the look of the AKG's how do the k271 compare to k550?
is it the case of larger number better headphone?

In general, the higher number AKGs are more expensive/ "better," but you can find big fans of each. I can't compare them from experience, so I suggest just looking at reviews. Remember that if you're getting your first good headphone, it's hard to go wrong. Either one is going to sound very good.

I do not want too much bass would like to hear it. you may be right in saying complete neutral is not right. I currently have etymotics hf5 and the bass that comes from them when they are inserted correctly and sealed is great and i like the rest of the sound that comes from them.

Etymotics are known for having a more neutral bass signature (I have the ER4Ps). K550 you should like. If you want to spend a little bit less, Onkyo ES-FC300 are good as well. Here are reviews of each:

The one thing to know about the K550 is that some people have fit issues with them and cannot get a good seal. Best to buy them from a place that has a good RMA policy.

Neither of these headphones will need an amp.

Thank you for the great replies i'll look into those onlyo's.
I'll try find a store in Melbourne (Australia), that hopefully has them on show somewhere. Not many places have the high end to test.
I know of a few stores hopefully I can try them out.

When i bought the etymotics i hadn't tried them or listened was blind faith following what i read on head-fi. I trust everyone reviews.

I really like the sound of the etymotics it's just unfortunate that having them in all day becomes a bit uncomfortable.
