There are quite a few binaural sound clips on the net you can download and listen to. I happen to own some binaural microphones and have done a little recording on DAT with them. The ability of binaural to capture reality is astonishing. Binaural recording as a 'business' is limited and probably doomed, but, the lessons learned from binaural are helpfull to sound processing scientists.
I just got a good one. "Disciplines" by the Vattel Cherry Trio(s).
Cherry is a Free bass player. Great stuff, and more than once the binaural recording made me turn my head or jumped up because someone made a noise on the soundstage.
Available from CD Baby and drimala.
I need to look into these myself, and I appreciate the recommendations.
www.binaural.com has not been in condition to ship anything for about a year, and one wonders whether they really exist. Has anyone actually received any product from them recently?
I have tried and don't recommend two discs (mentioned favorably on binaural.com) by Newport Classics with the Pasadena Symphony conducted by Jorge Mester. There's the Saint-Saens 3rd symphony and Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" on these, but the recording is not set up for much ambient sound. They hung the mike above and just a little behind the conductor with the result that there still is no perceptible distance between listener and orchestra. These recordings must have been designed for speakers--if they were sensibly designed for anything whatever.
