The only real *equivalent* to the HD600 is the HD580... it's just about the same sound. If that's what you liked, there's no guarantee whatsoever that you would like the HD595 or whatever other Senn cans people are recommending here, and I have no clue why people are recommending you go with a different sound than the one you liked!

I would get at least an inexpensive amp like the Headsave Go-Vibe if you buy 'em, since they don't sound all that great unamped.

x2!!! Dont jump on the HD595 just because everyone suggests it. It's a completely different signature than the HD600 or 580, and IMHO something that you should demo before buying.

I spent some time with both cans at the san jose meet and my ears just could not hear a difference between 580 and 600. So I chose the 580. I see no need to upgrade to the 600, when the differences (to my ears) are mostly cosmetic.

Get either HD600 or HD580 if you are on a budget. Make sure you get an amp to drive them. If amped correctly these cans can do wonders. If not then you will be one of the people complaining about Senn veil.

Just out of curiosity, how well would a Cmoy drive the 580s? I'm building a Cmoy, and in a while I plan to get the 580 or 595s. I'm sure there would be improvement with a more expensive headphone amp, but still...

The kind of headphone amps these guys are talking about here are not big at all. Merely the size of a pack of cigs or even the size of a credit card! Two choices I would recommend. The first is a very cheap, but good sounding one: the Go-Vibe ($69US):

The second batch is from Ray Samuels Audio, which seems to be favoured around this forums a lot. There are two models to choose from: the SR-71 and the Hornet. The Hornet is the size of a credit card and the SR-71 slightly bigger. These amps are more expensive. The Hornet is very new, so you might have to hunt around for pics...

What's your price range?

Govibe is my recommendation, and what I use. Although an SR71 would be ideal IMHO.

Yes a well made cmoy can perform very well. Pick your caps, OP amp, gain and power configuration wisely for synnergy with the HD and you will be rewarded. Cmoy perfomance varies greatly depending on the components selected and competence of the builder... anywhere from an RA1 (or better) to a boostaroo.
