hey

I'm kinda new to this stuff and i need hlep on choosing a GOOD player for kinda cheap. Maybe something i can get on ebay for 60 bucks. I'm thinking about a minidisc player. Right now, i'm looking at the MZ-NE410 and MZ-N505. Are these any good? I'm not very familiar with other brands of minidiscs, so if you can refer me to something that would be nice!

I'd get the more versatile MZ-N505 over the newer MZ-NE410, since the latter can record only from a Windows-based PC but not from other audio sources (due to the NE410's lack of any audio inputs whatsoever other than the USB connector).

out of MZ-NE410 and MZ-N505, i would get the 505.
410 has no A/C adatorp to charge rechargeable battery/home use. 410 has no line-in, which can only record from computer via NetMd. 410's casing is 100% plastic. 410 has no remote jack
the only thing 505 lacks is mic input, but 505 can be hacked to a n1, and get a LCD remote for easier use and more functions if u hacked to a n1
505 > 410

On top of what ProFingerSk8er said, an AC adaptor for the MZ-NE410 is a $25~$30 accessory (Sony AC-E30A, available at SonyStyle USA, Best Buy and a few other places).

And the bundled NetMD drivers and software are compatible only with Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP.

acutally i just bought a 410 for my friend from ebay last week, it acutally has no plugs for any AC adaptor, big reason to stay away from 410

I stand corrected on the AC capability of the MZ-NE410.

However, I'd prefer the elimination of such capability even on top-of-the-line models - for safety reasons. (That is, even a $14,000 unit will only run off of batteries - and with no provision whatsoever of using AC household current power.) That means no more built-in chargers or charging cradles that could incorrectly charge batteries (and thus drastically shorten the useful life of the expensive rechargeable batteries for those units). All nickel-based batteries should be rapid-charged in a smart charger that can charge cells individually and is equipped with a separate charging circuit for each cell. Unfortunately, built-in charging circuits rely soly on a heat sensor to terminate the charge - not smart enough, in my judgment - and charge batteries in parallel, thus getting the entire charge cycle wrong (particularly when one cell ages more rapidly than the other).
