First impressions:

I love the sound, the bass is great for a lot of the electronica &such that I listen to, and they also seem to reproduce vocals well.

However, I find that the headband really presses down into my head - it's not the vice-like grip that everyone else seems to find an issue, but rather that the headband is wayyyy too short (i've got it fully extended).
I didn't think I had a big head, but these do dig in rather a lot...

Is there anything I can do?

Press the earcups together inside your palms and push inward on the headband like you would with tongs. This should arc the headband a bit. Do it somewhat gently, though.

K81DJs.. for classical?

Not that the K18s are good, but better than. Looking at the A500s originally. Would they have been better or 280pros? Got the impression once the foam was removed the K81s were basically OK overall (perhaps a false impression). Looking for closed cans with a good soundstage for gaming that are also decent for music. Compromises are going to have to be made.

I'd still like to know, genuinely, what you would have chosen to fit the requirements: closed, excellent soundstage, and play music (a capella, classical) well.

Hey, I call always sell the K81DJs. ~40hrs breakin should actually be worth extra...

What about Alessandro MS-1's? Aren't they about $100... I haven't seen any comparison's between those and the ES-7's. How do the MS-1's stack up against the HD 25-1 or ES-7's? Sorry for the newb question.

i'd have to agree with 3X0 and vote for the ES7. they sux when new and after a huge brake-in period, my ES7s have bloomed into a superbly well balanced cans with a tight meathy bottom end (kills the ksc75 in this dept), sweet tuneful mids and smooth detailed highs.

they do lack technically when compared with top cans but portable and ready to go, the ES7 rocks esp. with metal, rock, r&b, house, etc.....

the only complaint for me is the fit of the ES7s be a bit of PITA. sometimes i get it rite and can listen for hrs and sometime it pinches/irritates my ear (right side esp. for some weird reason). other than that, i found portable sonic nirvana.

O and did i mention the great looks and that it sounds awesome just straight out of the ipod? IMO good amplification brings it up a notch

scottiebabie, did you try bending the metal elbows of the ES7 to fit your head better? Comfort improves substantially when this is done.

If you are in a budget get the K81DJ and then recable them yourself with a quadstar silver wire from HGA. You can get it done for the same or less than the vanilla HD25.
If you buy the HD25 you will have to upgrate the steel cable with at least the copper cable used in the HD650.
